Christmas of 1980 my ship was in dry dock at the former Brooklyn Navy Yard. I had the duty as Duty OPS on Christmas Eve. After being relieved Christmas morning the Communications Officer and I went back to one of the two houses set aside for the officers.

Someone had left the WPIX Yule log going on the TV. We sat down to watch a while. After a few minutes I said, "This isn't right." I got up and moved the TV into the empty fireplace. John said, "Much better."

A few minutes later the XO walked by, looked at the TV in the fireplace and muttered, "I don't want to know about it," before heading upstairs.

"Ceterum censeo Islam esse delendam."
