There's definitely some truth to this, but that goes to the heart of what exactly a "democratic" form of government is supposed to mean.

This is also what makes U.S. foreign policy over the last 25 years so idiotic. The Bush administration should have been laughed out of existence once it allowed the post-Ba'athist Iraqi government to draft a new constitution in which Islam was established as the official state religion.

In fact, the U.S. has spent the better part of three decades propping up regimes all over the Middle East where Islam is the undisputed official religion of the state.
