Long overdue.

The Kinks were way ahead of their time.

“The tax man’s taken all my dough
And left me in this stately home
Lazing on a sunny afternoon
And I can’t sail my yacht
He’s taken everything I got
All I’ve got’s this sunny afternoon

Save me, save me, save me from this squeeze
I gotta big fat mama trying to break me...”

Fab tunes . Two of my faves that are lesser known are Autumn Almanac and Deadend Street .

Once under a scarlet sky I told you never ending lies,
But they were the words of a drunken vagabond
Who knew very well he would break your heart before long
Oh forgive me Genevieve.

He should have held out for a lordship.

(First said by Keith Richards, about Mick Jagger’s knighthood.)

They were my fave band from 1964-1979 . Wasn’t too fond of their 80’s/90’s output , though . Last time I saw them was in Tokyo in 1992 or ‘93 and they sounded better than ever , playing much of the post 1980’s catalog . Young Japanese girls sitting next to us quietly singing along to many of the tunes knowing the lyrics by heart !

what I always liked about the Kinks is that they never sounded like some over engineered studio band. They were the stuff of a classic 1960’s garage band.

This Ray Davies song is more meaningful now...rockin’ song, too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCR83LxGKkg

Kinks – Catch Me Now I’m Falling

I remember when you were down
And you needed a helping hand
I came to feed you
But now that I need you
You won’t give me a second glance
Now I’m calling all citizens from all over the world
This is captain America calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling

Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now I’m falling

I remember when you were down
You would always come running to me
I never denied you and I would guide you
Through all of your difficulties
Now I’m calling all citizens from all over the world
This is captain America calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling

Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now I’m falling

When you were broke you would come to me
And I always pull you round
Now I call your office on the telephone
And your secretary tells me that she’s sorry
But you’ve gone out to town

This is captain America calling
This is captain America calling

Help me now I’m calling you
Catch me now I’m falling
I’m in your hands, it’s up to you
Catch me now I’m falling

Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling

I was the one who always bailed you out
Of your depressions and your difficulties
I never thought that you would let me down
But the next time you’ve in trouble
Better not come to me

Now I’m calling all citizens from all over the world
This is captain America calling
I bailed you out when you were down on your knees
So will you catch me now I’m falling

Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling
Catch me now I’m falling

One of my favorites, with the Kinks being the less heralded of the Fab Four from the British Invasion (Beatles, Stones, and the Who being the other three, of course). He put out a couple of strong solo discs in more recent years and is said to be working on a new one called Americana. I saw a video of him on YT from early last year and he did not appear to be the picture of good health, unfortunately, but maybe he was just under the weather.
