No idea, but in an attempt to keep in the spirit of the lunacy, I’ll go out on a limb and suggest certain ‘fertilizer’ might be considered offensive to vegans, what with it being an animal um, product. I can think of no other possibility.

One possibility that came to my mind is that British usages of "produce" may be broader than many Americans', and I've found confirmation in British news sources and commercial sites. One page repeatedly associates "British produce" with local cheeses.
