Does anyone use Verizon cellular phone service with their regular cordless phones at home?
Verizon Wireless | 1/22/17 | Me, myself, & I

I have been working on ways to economize. One glaring monthly cost is paying $100 to Verizon for my landline service, which is a ridiculous amount of money.

I don't find cell phones to be physically comfortable to talk on for long period of time, and I like the features of my cordless phone (for example, it can block 250 unwanted callers, like telemarketers, etc.). So I wanted a way to keep my comfortable feature rich cordless phone but at a much more affordable rate.

I called Verizon and found that they have a plan wherein you can use a device (Novatel T1114) to allow you to get cellular phone service WITH your cordless phone, for only $20/month in a 2 year contract. As they say on their webpage:

"You can keep your existing phone and phone number and move your home phone service to the Verizon Wireless network with Wireless Home Phone. No broadband or Internet connection is needed for Wireless Home Phone. Plug in your existing touch tone home telephone, and store the compact Wireless Home Phone unit out of the way or on the included desktop stand."

That's saving $1,000 a year and that's what I'm talking about! The Wireless Home Phone unit to which they refer costs $29 but it won't allow you to use your fax machine. The T1114 device, which costs $49 allows you to use your formerly landline cordless phone to now utilize cellular service AND it allows you to use your fax machine, too. It sounds like the best of both worlds.

Soooo, I am asking fellow FReepers if anyone has this setup at home, and how do you like it. Thanks!

It was called VERIZON home connect it is unlimited local and long distance calls for $20 a month. It comes to about $25 with taxes. If you have a security system you will have the security co, add an air/cell back up for it to call out properly. Cost varies for that card from $100-$200 and is a one time cost. You will also not be able to fax. Otherwise for $25 a month you have phone service.

We have some echoing sometimes, but other than that, no complaints.

When the in line Verizon sold out to Frontier, we got Verizon Wireless Home Phone for the house. It’s a box that plugs into the wall and uses your old house phones with it. Also, you keep your same number. It costs $20 something a month which is so much cheaper than the old Verizon or Frontier in line service.

But, we also dropped Verizon’s too expensive cell phone service and went with the cheapest Virgin Mobile plan for $20/mo. Those changes are saving over $100/mo.

The reason I keep my land line is that they supply their own voltage for it, whereas if your electricity depends on the power company, and it goes down, so does your phone

That's why we didn't want to switch over. Out here in the country, we wanted different means of communication but the cost was getting ridiculous to maintain so many different devices. Food and heat won out.

We use Verizon's "Home Phone" device (which is what you are describing), which is $20/mn (taxes and fees run another $6/mn), and I got an AT&T cordless phone with 2 handsets (one time cost of $60). Works really well. Unlimited US calling.

Just make sure the device has good cell contact. I put the device next to a window that has line-of-sight to the tower, and we get excellent service. I'm not a huge Verizon fan, but this is a good deal. You can't get/send texts. Caller ID is extra (we didn't sign up for that; the number comes thru, tho). The device is small, and most people think it is some kind of security device if they look in the window.

Yes, that is exactly the service I am describing. I have a cell phone, which doesn’t have Verizon cell service (too expensive), and I am able to speak on it with absolutely no dead spots in my home. It does use Verizon cell towers, so I think that means that this little doohickey plugged into my Panasonic cordless phone would work perfectly well. I don’t know where my nearest Verizon cell tower is, but I just did a search for Verizon cell tower coverage and it seems pretty well saturated where I live.

You cannot use your fax with the little black $29 Mifi device from Verizon with the 90 degree bent antenna. However, if you spring for the $49 Mifi device from Verizon, you CAN use your phone as described AND you can use your fax machine.

Try http://www.antennasearch.com/ to get a list of towers in your area.

But if your current cell phones are using Verizon's towers, I suspect the rig we're talking about ought to work real well for you. Good luck!
