First sign of obesity in Arctic people [snip] remote tribes are exposed to instant noodles and pasta

The first-ever cases of obesity have been recorded among nomadic Arctic reindeer herders, after they became exposed to instant noodles and other junk foods.

Russian scientists are warning about the dramatic change in the Nenets and Khanty peoples on the icy Yamal peninsula in northern Siberia, who for centuries had eaten only traditional foods.

A diet based on venison and fresh river fish meant that obesity was unknown among these indigenous peoples, but now outside influences are changing everything.

Articles like this extolling these diets and life styles always overlook the fact that these “traditional peoples” rarely live beyond sixty years. There seem to be benefits to modern living, diet and all.

Makes sense.
Their normal diet is mostly protein and their metabolism is optimized for it.
Start feeding them carbs, and they get fat.

Start feeding them carbs

Nobody is “feeding them carbs”.

They are eating them by choice, a lot easier than doing the hard work necessary for venison and fish.

Very likely their exercise level has been significantly reduced. It is not just carbs. It is a common result of access to abundant food without having to expend much energy to get it.

CARBS are evil... all this nonsense about fat over the last 30 years or whatever is total nonsense, its high carb intake that is at the root of the obesity and health epidemics.

Carbohydrates are not human food. They should be illegal.

I would think that their traditional, healthy diet is probably higher in fat than protein. But your point about carbs is right on. Take any healthy population: if they commence a diet high in carbohydrates, many of them will become sick and fat. Carbs are behind the epidemic of chronic diseases.

This is NOT new information. Weston Price had this figured out in the 1930s-40s: Nutrition_and_Physical_Degeneration

Note that the diseases on your chart only go in one direction, from Europe to America. Why? I recall a looong time ago (1980s probably) in Discover Magazine Jared Diamond wrote an article called “The Arrow of Disease” that asked that question but I don’t recall what his conclusions were. Still, the question has stuck with me.
