The longest Academy Awards telecast in a decade culminated in a surreal mix-up over the best picture winner. A long and eventful 89th Academy Awards continued the ABC telecast's recent downward ratings trend.
Early numbers have the lengthy show off 4 percent from comparable stats in 2016, averaging an overnight 22.4 rating among metered market households. That measurement, courtesy of Nielsen, is shy of last year's which saw its overnight score (a 23.4 rating) ultimately translate to 34.43 million viewers.

Very good news. I alway watch DVR and am not a Nielsen Family so it doesn’t matter what I do. The good news about DVR is you take a 3 hour, 44 minute show and watch it in 60 minutes. It is wonderful. The ending was amazing. I have to admit that.
I love my dvr. Great for sporting events also.
I. Do. Not. Care. What. Happened. At. The. Oscars.
Even if it was a total disaster. Well, maybe if the auditorium suffered a severe lightning strike during the presentations and was set ablaze, I would watch the rerun.
Again and again.
Events such as the Oscars, which has been going on for almost a century, and the Super Bowl, which has been going on for more than half a century, are losing their luster: they are the defining annual events of a past set of generations. I suspect they will become continually less and less a part of the lives and concerns of Americans in general.
“Very good news. I alway watch DVR “
Pretty sure they count the “DVR’d” live recordings in their Nielsens... “Nielsen’s Live Plus”
agree saving time with DVR, but they still know you ‘watched’.
The giving the award to the wrong movie was intentional. The miss universe did it a few years ago to drum up more intrest and Hollywood copied them.
Yep it was long. It went past midnight in the east. That has got to lose some viewers to intentionally schedule it so it goes close to four hours and ends so late in the east.
I watched martial arts movies ;-)
Oh, were those on?
Sorry, I was watching Walker, Texas Ranger on GRIT TV
Boycott the Oscars, I am a little displeased that it’s still as high as it is, common people we need to totally sink these Hollywood elites! next year everyone don’t even record it.
+2.
Well if they do that and it’s included in the numbers, then viewership is even worse than this. PrimeTime is automatically recorded on our DVR but 90% of the programs, including the Oscars, are routinely deleted without watching even a second of it.
So if that’s counted, then as I said, the numbers are even worse. Just because something’s recorded doesn’t mean it’s watched and I bet there was alot of that last nite.
If it wasn’t for the foul-up, nobody would have been talking about it.
I was hoping for an earthquake, myself. (But a very localized one).
It should have gotten .4 percent.
I am not sure how the ratings work. Somebody (I forgot who) posted that cable can trace what shows are watched and for how long, etc.
