I’m an avid cyclist, and even I think this is just plain stupid. I don’t have to put my feet on the ground to come to a momentary stop at a stop sign, before I proceed, which makes it legal. Not to mention, the rift this is going to exacerbate, and the legal ramifications when some idiot blows through a stop sign and gets hit. But hey, its not like the California Legislators have any pressing issues to work on.

I saw a presentation about a year and a half ago that was given by a Deputy U.S. Secretary of Transportation. One of the things he mentioned is that they're starting to get very concerned about recent increases in traffic fatality rates -- with a lot of the problem attributed to fatalities among cyclists and pedestrians.

I'm really surprised these people haven't figured out that putting all this money into bike lanes and "pedestrian-friendly streets" only serves to increase the interactions between motorists and these other completely unprotected users of the road.
