They’re self-identifying with the underdog/oppressed character played by John Hurt in “1984”.
They’re overlooking the fact that they are emulating the despotic oppressor character played by John Hurt in the very similar “V for Vendetta”.
They’re oblivious to the core message in “1984”:
“We do not destroy the heretic because he resists us: so long as he resists us we never destroy him. We convert him, we capture his inner mind, we reshape him. We burn all evil and all illusion out of him; we bring him over to our side, not in appearance, but genuinely, heart and soul. We make him one of ourselves before we kill him.”
To wit: thinking they were rebels, they became the evil they thought they opposed.
Socialist Orwell was chagrined that ‘1984’ was understood to bash socialism generally rather than Leninist-Stalinism specifically as he intended.
Political conservatism as in ‘for God and country’ wasn’t even in Orwell’s mindset.
Maybe, just maybe, some will come out of the showings having discovered the message of _1984_.

Agree. We are slowly finding out the aspects of Big Brother in the Obama Admin. And they are pretending that Trump is Big Brother. Leftists embarrass themselves with their ignorance and blind loyalty to their ‘leaders’.
Will they even recognize the irony between the book/movie and their own worldviews?
It’s OK, after the movie they are doing a Public Reading of “Das Capital” to bring the Students back to reality.

But do not mention that Obama’s Ministry of Love had cranked up the telescreen system to spy on his opponents.
“Indie Theaters” = run as nonprofits as few people would pay to view the crap they show.
