Behind the Scenes of the Very Last Episode of ‘Red Eye’
The Observer ^ | April 10, 2017 | Michael Malice

My goal was to become a regular on Red Eye.

Actually my ultimate goal was to take Andy Levy’s role if the ombudsman left the show, but that might have been a bridge too far. It was 2015, and I had been making regular appearances on Fox Business’ program The Independents and its successor Kennedy for months. I would sit on Kennedy’s party panel alongside great people—the best people, you’ve never seen such people—and listen as they discussed when they would next appear on Red Eye.

Red Eye was always something unique. It was one of the few places on television where the vibe was both humorous and right-of-center. It was frequently bizarre and random; sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. Yet this made for a complete departure from the highly choreographed world of tv news and even tv political comedy. Does anyone doubt how a Republican is going to come off during a Stewart-era Daily Show piece?

I wasn’t at all jealous of my colleagues for getting invited...

The show was never the same after Bill Shulz left.

The should have either a) ended it there or b) paid Gavin McIness whatever it would take for him to take Bill’s place.

It often fell flat, but it also provided some of the funniest moments on television and it is hard to imagine a more surprising show on a network like Fox.

Tom is a great guy, but I really wanted Gavin to replace him, not that I expected that to happen. He's on FNC's crap list.

I felt sorry for Bill Shultz but never found him funny. He made faces, that was about it.

Michael Malice was good, so was Tom Shillue. I'll miss the show.

I actually ran into Bill in a restroom once.

It's not what you're thinking.

Completely agree.

Another great aspect to the show was the community of fans it created..

The live-tweets of my fellow insomniacs were almost as entertaining as the show itself.

Bill Shulz was terrific, though sometimes annoying, but he was a terrific foil for Greg. RedEye didn't seem as "fun" after he left. But for me, once Greg left, it just wasn't as good. Tom could be OK, I guess, but I really hoped that they would have offered Gavin the host position, but given his other work, he's never be allowed on a network show as a host.

Michael Malice was quite good, bringing a lot of good information regarding communist countries like North Korea. Having been born in the Soviet Union, he's not a fan of either communism nor socialism.

I missed out on that... I'm not on Twitter, and I would DVR the show, and watch it while getting ready for work in the mornings.

I wonder what Andy's going to do from now on.

Definitely

I didn't discover Red Eye for a few years, but once I did I was hooked.
