My brother’s dog got snatched by a mountain lion in Oregon. I had a friend whose cat likely was eaten by an alligator in the Villages in Florida. It happens all the time. This sounds like an extreme example, but be careful about letting your pets run free.

Hello Mountain Lions - my elderly mother has a delicious little mutt that pisses in the house and snaps at people.

Exactly and now that the cat has found a good, easy food source it will be back.

She needs to get a good weapon. More than a whistle

This area not as rural as I expected.

What’s a good defense against mountain lions in suburban California, if hiking, etc... in these areas?

Once worked in a Hollywood bungalow up in the hills below the Hollywood sign. The residents left windows open and had boards running out to the trees. Apparently they let squirrels have the run of the place.

An increase in mountain lion attacks on pets and livestock in California is mirrored by requests for permits to kill mountain lions.

the number of permit requests to kill mountain lions is rising, especially in far Northern California and on the Central Coast. 256 permits were issued in 2015 (up from 216 in 2014),

California banned mountain lion hunting back in the 1990’s and now the mountain lions are so overpopulated that they’ve wiped out entire deer populations and now they’re so hungry they’ll eat pets.

Next up is the liberals will be losing their children to the mountain lions.

She needs to get a good weapon.

Or a bigger dog (or two), something that might make the mountain lion think about looking for easier prey.

Yeah, that’s more common, getting attacked while out for a walk. The story I’m thinking of I’m sure the lion entered a house. Big or little, cats are sneaky! lol

I doubt she’s aware and nobody bothered to explain to her that this cat has been casing her house for a while. If it hadn’t happened this way, likely it would have taken the child outside playing - I guess this portugese breed is barkless - and she would never know what heppened.

Mountain lion ‘stalks’ woman in southwest Colorado .. A lone hiker had a frightening encounter with a mountain lion in San Miguel County.

A sheriff’s office spokesperson says the feline predator “stalked” the woman in Placerville which is about 16 miles northwest of Telluride ..

Out here in the West, you never leave a door open into your house. Even an enclosed back yard is vulnerable. Mountain Lions and bobcats can jump walls. Sometimes I can be sitting in my kitchen and see a bobcat walk across my patio, in broad daylight. They usually leave you alone, but my cousin lost a little dog to a bobcat one night when she let the dog out before bedtime. Whenever a friend moves to Arizona, I tell them not to leave their doors open. Javelinas will walk right into your house if a door is open.
