What you think you know about autism might be a lie

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of every 68 children born in the United States has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Though all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups are affected by ASD, myths and misunderstandings still persist in media, schools and workplaces — that childhood vaccines are a cause has been disproved, yet the rumor refuses to die. April is World Autism Awareness month, so we spoke with Dr. Joseph Buxbaum, a molecular geneticist and neurobiologist who directs the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai Health System, to separate fact from fiction.

What is autism spectrum disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental disorder affecting brain development. ASD is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication and the presence of restricted or repetitive behaviors, including sensory symptoms.

The severity and presentation of symptoms vary across individuals. ASD is about four times more common among boys than girls. Due to increased public awareness, improved diagnostic tools and research in this area, more cases are identified and at younger ages. Early diagnosis is important because it can lead to earlier treatment, which research has linked to more positive outcomes.

What causes autism spectrum disorder? Vaccines are definitely not linked to it, correct?

There is strong data indicating that genetics are a predominant cause of autism. There are numerous, very compelling epidemiological studies that have clearly disproven any connection between autism and vaccines. One of the primary missions of the Seaver Autism Center is to investigate causes of autism. We take a genetics-first approach to this investigation. We expect there to be about 1,000 genes in the human genome for autism.

Your theory could be right and there is some connection to Gut problems with autism. Have you seen this, ww.massgeneral.org/News/pressrelease.aspx?id=2041

Excerpt here “Study finds alterations in both blood-brain barrier and intestinal permeability in individuals with autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has the dubious distinction of being the fastest-growing developmental disability in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With 1 in every 68 children born in this country diagnosed with ASD, parents are looking everywhere for answers about best treatments. Along with selective medication to treat certain symptoms, traditional treatments include intensive behavioral approaches. But with no “one-size-fits-all” treatment approach, parents often turn to diverse complementary and alternative therapies.

Just as parents are looking for answers, scientists are trying to tease out the causes of this multifactorial and complex condition. “Although we are fairly certain that there is a genetic component, there are many pathways for an individual to arrive at autism’s final destination,” says Alessio Fasano, MD, director of the Center for Celiac Research and Treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and co-senior author of a study published in the journal Molecular Autism. “What might dispose one person to develop ASD – either pre- or post-natally – might have no such effect on another person,” he adds.

Looking at the interconnectivity of the gut-brain axis – the biochemical signaling between the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems – researchers led by Maria Rosaria Fiorentino, PhD, of the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Center at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC), have opened up a new avenue of research into the pathophysiology of ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders. “As far as we know, this is the first study to look at the molecular signature of blood-brain barrier dysfunction in ASD and schizophrenia in samples from human patients,” says Fiorentino. In collaboration with researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and others, Fiorentino’s group found an altered blood-brain barrier in tissue samples from people with ASD when compared with healthy controls.

The group analyzed postmortem cerebral cortex and cerebellum tissues from 33 individuals – 8 with ASD, 10 with schizophrenia and 15 healthy controls. Altered expression of genes associated with blood-brain-barrier integrity and function and with inflammation was detected in ASD tissue samples, supporting the hypothesis that an impaired blood-brain barrier associated with neuroinflammation contributes to ASD.

In keeping with the hypothesis that the interplay within the gut-brain axis is a crucial component in the development of neurodevelopmental disorders, the group also analyzed intestinal epithelial tissue from 12 individuals with ASD and 9 without such disorders. That analysis revealed that 75 percent of the individuals affected by ASD had reduced expression of barrier-forming cellular components, compared with controls, and 66 percent showed a higher expression of molecules that increase intestinal permeability.

The study was driven in part by the high number of gastrointestinal problems that occur in people with ASD. Although considered controversial by some health care practitioners, a gluten- and casein-free diet has been shown to produce some improvement in behavioral and gastrointestinal symptoms in a subgroup of children with ASD. “This is the first time anyone has shown that an altered blood-brain barrier and impaired intestinal barrier might both play a role in neuroinflammation in people with ASD,” says Fiorentino.

Fasano adds, “As well as information on the blood-brain barrier, we were looking for more information on how increased intestinal permeability, otherwise known as a ‘leaky gut,’ might affect the development of ASD in the context of a dysfunctional gut-brain axis.”

And what about those who do just fine?

What about children in third world countries with few vaccines.

What about my generation who received vaccines with no great outbreak of autism?

Perhaps autism is caused by the same things that cause gender dysphoria, which seems to be increasing?

So is the autism rate higher in black children?

I seem to remember reading that there was almost no autism before the late sixties. Even then, metal absorption was suspect.

?

We didn’t receive seven injections at birth

In any case 1 in 68, which is a statistic I see personally in my circles, bears investigation. The mention of environmental causes makes people like you respond in anger with emotional illogical open ended attacks.

Gets us nowhere

No, it has always been around. It wasn’t diagnosed as Autism. I knew some growing up. Some were called Idiot Savants. There was one in my wife’s hometown that sold art he painted from a wagon downtown.

They generally were confined to asylums. My aunt worked in one (St Albans). I remember in college there was an old guy in a nursing home that played the piano while we sang to them.

The real reason for greater numbers of Autistic kids is the epidemic of undiagnosed autoimmune diseases affecting the mother.

I have a granddaughter who is almost two. She did not receive seven vaccines at birth. What are you talking about?

Everyone mentions vaccines but no one points to Fluoride. More and more attention is starting to be paid to this possibility.

They usually only get the hep B at birth.

They get multiple shots at 2 mo, 4 mo, etc.

This is a great radio interview with a man named Joshua Coleman whose son suffered a vaccine injury. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgLyXifLxp4&feature=youtu.be

Measles has been around for thousands of years it very rarely has long term effects. Now that we inject kids with massive doses of toxins we have autism instead that has life long repercussions.

Clearly the “cure” is far worse than the disease.

By the way, isn’t it interesting that the symptoms of autism is the same as mercury poisioning?

“Some clues my wife was taught to look for as signs of autism among high school students: Delayed sexual activity. Fan of science fiction. Likes numbers, chess, computer programming, etc.”

I have to call BS on that.

All that means is that sometimes bright kids are late bloomers physically.

“It wasn’t diagnosed as Autism.”

I can remember some kids who probably had Asperger’s.

It would be interesting to know how many people with autism were delivered by C-section.

There are great benefits for children coming through the birth canal from mom's vaginal secretions.

C-sections are way up, maybe there is a connection.

Yes, autism was around long before vaccines and so was ADHD, but in both, BOYS AND MEN are the greater in number so DRUG THEM NOW.

The article is basically BS in my opinion. The Dr interview at the link of post #56 is well worth the 10mins.

Sorry if this subject doesn't interest you but I have 9 grandkids....
