What you think you know about autism might be a lie

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of every 68 children born in the United States has autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Though all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic groups are affected by ASD, myths and misunderstandings still persist in media, schools and workplaces — that childhood vaccines are a cause has been disproved, yet the rumor refuses to die. April is World Autism Awareness month, so we spoke with Dr. Joseph Buxbaum, a molecular geneticist and neurobiologist who directs the Seaver Autism Center for Research and Treatment at Mount Sinai Health System, to separate fact from fiction.

What is autism spectrum disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex developmental disorder affecting brain development. ASD is characterized by difficulties in social interaction, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication and the presence of restricted or repetitive behaviors, including sensory symptoms.

The severity and presentation of symptoms vary across individuals. ASD is about four times more common among boys than girls. Due to increased public awareness, improved diagnostic tools and research in this area, more cases are identified and at younger ages. Early diagnosis is important because it can lead to earlier treatment, which research has linked to more positive outcomes.

What causes autism spectrum disorder? Vaccines are definitely not linked to it, correct?

There is strong data indicating that genetics are a predominant cause of autism. There are numerous, very compelling epidemiological studies that have clearly disproven any connection between autism and vaccines. One of the primary missions of the Seaver Autism Center is to investigate causes of autism. We take a genetics-first approach to this investigation. We expect there to be about 1,000 genes in the human genome for autism.

I hope the same. I also think there is a good chance they will. I was hoping the first lady might take it on as her special project. I heard she is focused on cyber bullying. that's excellent too.

Yes, probably even more. When you live autism in and out every day you start picking up on all the people that really are the spectrum.

I have become much more tolerant of screaming children in the grocery store now that I know about autism. Yes that kid might be a spoiled brat or there may be another reason.

I am not trying to be mean but you are parroting a myth or inaccurate history. The truth is all diseases which we vaccinate for were in massive decline BEFORE the vaccines were introduced. Living conditions, sanitation, nutrition, clean water, all contributed to precipitous decline in incidence of these diseases. To simply attribute it to the vaccines is error.

Only *some* diseases can be controlled by controlling environmental factors. For instance, controlling fleas and limiting contact with wild rodents has greatly reduced the incidence of plague. However, many other diseases are passed human to human or through aerosol routes. These diseases can only be prevented by vaccines.

The claim that these diseases were in decline prior to vaccinations is a favorite ploy by anti-vaxxers who count on the fact that their target audience knows very little about the multiple means of disease transmission. In the real world, however, there are many diseases for which the only reason we don't have millions of cases and thousands of deaths every year is the fact that we vaccinate. Compare the incidence of childhood diseases and deaths from those diseases between the US and, for example, countries in sub-Saharan Africa where vaccines are nearly non-available. Millions of children under the age of five die every year.

I am however very against the SUPER SCHEDULE we as a country have adopted. Look around the rest of the world, we are alone in our massive increase of vaccinations. We have concurrently experienced a massive increase in SIDS and vaccine injuries and Autism.

Um, no. Our vaccine schedule is developed around our specific disease threats, and does not include many diseases that are routinely vaccinated against in other parts of the world. Here is the WHO schedule, which recommends vaccines for diseases that do not even occur in the US. You *can* get vaccinated for those diseases in the US if you plan to travel to regions where those diseases occur.

The death rate of newborns, including deaths from SIDS, has been decreasing steadily. The only reason that people might perceive that SIDS is more prevalent is that deaths from infectious disease have become so rare, while the death rate from SIDS has barely dropped at all because scientists are still trying to understand its causes.

Of course, "vaccine injuries" and the persistent myth that autism is somehow linked to vaccines come straight from anti-vax, anti-science fraud sites.

Never making the connection that “their” vaccination was 4 shots and kids these days are being faced with 60.

If you count the number of antigens--proteins that provoke an immune response--that people are exposed to, the number is actually far less from today's vaccines than from the vaccines people my age received as children. That is because the vaccine practice in previous decades involved killing or weakening pathogenic organisms and injecting them into the arm. Since an intact organism, alive or dead, contains many thousands of proteins, that meant that a single vaccine would expose the patient to thousands of antigens. Many modern vaccines, however, only contain a handful of antigens. Many modern vaccines include only the proteins that cause a protective immune response, so instead of containing tens of thousands of proteins, they might only contain a dozen or less.

In any case, the number of protein antigens that a child is exposed to through vaccines is insignificant against the number they are exposed to every day through normal activity. The things that they are constantly putting in their mouths are *not* sterile--they are just crawling with germs.

Can’t wait to see all the rabid pro vaxxers get faced with a plethora of potentially health harming vaccionations that are not optional. Actually I could wait my entire lifetime because that is medical tyranny.

I've no idea what a "health harming vaccionation" is, but I've had plenty of vaccinations. Just last summer, I had rabies, anthrax, smallpox, and Japanese encephalitis vaccines before going overseas. And I did not get sick while away from the US. (Smallpox is extinct, but the vaccine protects against other pox viruses that humans still catch.)

That’s what happened here. My son went in for his 4th round of shots and within a week, quit talking. Lost almost all eye contact too. 2 1/2 years old and he didn’t start to talk again until 4 1/2. At that point he started rattling off the words on signs while riding in the back of the car. Restaurant, Commercial, Insurance etc.

You probably were not still in diapers 7 yo and could talk by then.

Maybe you are on the sprectum and learned to adapt. Good for you, I'm happy for you. Come to my house for a few weeks. I could use a break. Maybe you can teach my grandson to adapt.

More anti-vax hooey?

FYI, that journal article that you referenced actually discounts vaccines as a contributor to autism. The article specifically mentions acetaminophen as a potential contributing cause—although it is not convincing. For one thing, it mentions adverse effects of acetaminophen in animals without mentioning doses.

The etiology of autism spectrum disorder suggests a strong genetic component modulated by many genes. In the case of most genetic conditions, having the genes is necessary for the condition to occur, but do not cause it. The condition actually happens because of an environmental factor that would not affect a person without the genes, but strongly affect a person who does have the genes. For example, some children are born with a defective DNA repair enzyme which causes them to develop permanent skin lesions upon exposure to UV light. But if they are never exposed to UV light, their skin will remain intact.

In the case of autism, the genetic contribution is complex and will take many more years of study to figure out. If environmental factors are involved, they likely act early in fetal development.

It is not a

And has more
Control of his emotions. But his life is sooooo much harder than it has to be. And he is the only one whom i forced all
Those vacccines into as a tiny infant. Also
The only one who constantly
Was
Sick after those
Vaccines. My other

hmmm. Autism in males, hypothyroidism in females? Leaky gut, gluten, and casein also causes a problem in my family. My sister was really suffering until she found the right doc and she changed her diet (she cut out all of it) and me, I’m just in agonizing pain all the time, fight to stay awake, and can’t think straight half the day.

Fluoride and chlorine effect the thyroid by depleting iodine, and the same diet that helps the thyroid, helps autistic kids. No gluten, no dairy (casien)...I’m seeing a pattern here.

>> By the way, isn’t it interesting that the symptoms of autism is the same as mercury poisioning? <<

Thimersol was removed from children’s vaccines more than a decade ago, and the autism rate of growth was unaffected. Autism is not a symptom of mercury poisoning. These are: poor coordination, numbness, skin rashes, memory problems (CERTAINLY not an autism symptom!!!), pink’s disease (a skin ailment), dificulty articulating sounds.

>> Clearly the “cure” is far worse than the disease. <<

As recently as 1980, Measels killed 2.6 million people per year, every year. That makes AIDS seem like a piker.

Check the ingredients again on the multi dose flu vaccine. As a bonus, it now contains aluminum too.

As you often are more likely to contract the disease once vaccinated, I sometimes wonder if the “preservatives” are the actual payload.

As mercury is a powerful corrosive, it is an odd choice for a preservative... To say nothing about its use as an injection.

But, hey, who am I to object I am no doctor, I just read stuff like how the dosage for mercury is based on the average adult body weight, not a child’s and think that’s funny, the o ly 180 pound babies are in college...

Exactly. Not only am I extremely tolerant, I try to befriend moms who are going through that new fear that something might be “wrong” with their child. I also adore kids with less severe autism because they are so observant and I love how they see the world. I get on well with them and have worked with them (not just my own).

But let’s be real. Life WITHOUT autism would be much easier.

>> Check the ingredients again on the multi dose flu vaccine. <<

Multi-dose flu vaccine is typically not used on children. Hence, you’re only fogging the issue. Again: there is no mercury in children’s vaccines.

>> As mercury is a powerful corrosive, <<

Oxygen is a much more powerful corrosive. Then again, the point of a preservative is to prevent contamination, so WTF are you talking about.

>> But, hey, who am I to object I am no doctor, <<

Yes, you are a completely uninformed idiot and should quit spreading lies that will some day kill millions of people.

unless there is an environmental change which is kicking off the expression and passing on of certain genes (epigenetics).

Well, yes, absolutely. What have we changed??
