Republicans exempt their own insurance from their latest health care proposal

Republican legislators want to keep popular Obamacare provisions for themselves and their staff.

House Republicans appear to have included a provision that exempts Members of Congress and their staff from their latest health care plan.

The new Republican amendment, introduced Tuesday night, would allow states to waive out of Obamacare’s ban on pre-existing conditions. This means that insurers could once again, under certain circumstances, charge sick people higher premiums than healthy people.

Republican legislators liked this policy well enough to offer it in a new amendment. They do not, however, seem to like it enough to have it apply to themselves and their staff. A spokesperson for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-N.J.) who authored this amendment confirmed this was the case: members of Congress and their staff would get the guarantee of keeping this Obamacare regulations. Health law expert Tim Jost flagged me to this particular issue.

A bit of background is helpful here. Obamacare requires all members of Congress and their staff to purchase coverage on the individual market, just like Obamacare enrollees. The politics of that plank were simple enough, meant to demonstrate that if the coverage in this law were good enough for Americans than it should be good enough for their representations in Washington.

Just repeal the damn thing you morons!

I'm thinking they get it just fine. They hate Deplorables. Could this be a poison pill to save Obamacare?

This article lies.

During the Obama Terror Obamacare was forced on the congressional staff. THEN IIRC monies were appropriated so the congressional staff did not have to pay for the additional hit that Obamacare was going to cost them.

Including Hill staffers who live and work in other states? Doesn't look like it!

While this plan would seemingly negatively affect Americans, and, indeed, would likely result in even more uninsured citizens than the initial 24 million predicted under the first iteration of the American Health Care Act, Republicans have sought to ensure that they (along with their staff) are not subject to the revocation of Obamacare protections that could result from the passage of this amendment.

According to Vox, the healthcare amendment dictates that members of Congress and their staff are actually exempt if states decide to waive Obamacare protections around cost of insurance coverage and minimum essential benefits. This means that, if this amendment were to pass and a state waived these protections, a citizen living in that state could endure higher healthcare costs and far less comprehensive coverage, while a congressperson or congressional staffer living in that same state would be exempt from these changes and could essentially maintain their old Obamacare plan.

Even if they pass this bill, Obamacare is still the law of the land, just modified.
There is no repeal.
There will be no repeal.
Rearrange and repair are all they are going to do.
Well, maybe rename.

Not sure if I trust MSNFN, but I’m happy they at least brought up the issue. Whatever Congress passes must apply to them as well.

My favorite Senate reporter:
"Niels Lesniewski‏ @nielslesniewski · 52m52 minutes ago
A note on that @voxdotcom story about member and staff health care. Actually, everyone uses the DC SHOP, regardless of residency. "

I can't think of a time I've believed something in VOX, to be frank.

That is such BS from the MSM. Congressmen have their own healthcare and they don’t pay for any of it. They never had Obamacare as they exempted themselves from it. That’s what should get people angry. Lawmakers should live under the same laws that they pass for everybody else.

In my opinion, Paul Ryan needs to resign on the grounds that he’s incompetent and a RINO. He’s a hypocritical two-faced failure as Speaker. How do We The People get him replaced ASAP?

And, none of these two-faced hypocrites in Congress should be taking time off for anything. If they want time off, they should resign!

Their obvious contempt of the American populace is so obvious I would call it antagonisticaly treasonous. What was it Obama called the populace? I think it was small minded and clueless about real things.
