UAE plans to drag an ICEBERG from Antarctica to provide drinking water for millions
Daily Mail ^ | 05/05/2017 | Tim Collins

The National Advisor Bureau, headquartered in Masdar City, Abu-Dhabi, plans to source the massive blocks of ice from Heard Island, around 600 miles (1000 kilometres) off the coast of mainland Antarctica.

It will then transport them around 5,500 miles (8,800 km) to Fujairah, one of the seven emirates which make up the UAE.

One iceberg could provide enough for one million people over five years, according to the company.

And the scheme could begin as early as the start of 2018.

The firm's director says they have already travelled the transportation route and used simulators to check the feasibility of the scheme, according to reports in Gulf News.

Speaking to the site about what he is calling the UAE Iceberg Project, Abdullah Mohammad Sulaiman Al Shehi said: 'Our simulator predicts that it will take up to one year [to tow an iceberg to UAE].

'We have formulated the technical and financial plan. Towing is the best method. We will start the project in beginning of 2018.

Wouldn’t a desalinization plant be quicker & cheaper?

This is cheaper and easier than desalinization? The Israelis are pumping millions of gallons through their Med plants.

"Wouldn’t a desalinization plant be quicker & cheaper?"

Of course it would.

But if I'm not mistaken, that would put the Arabs in the
position of relying on Israeli technology and processes.

Seems like a ton of work and cost compared to desalinating sea water.

Right now, they can have all the water they want from Lake Ontario - free.

This idea has been around for 20-30 years. It may not work and as another post indicated, it may be cheaper to build a desalination plant but at least someone is trying to see if it is feasible.

Just like the tanker Manhattan showed in 1969, it was not economical for tankers even with reinforced hulls and ice breaker bows to go through the Northwest Passage to get Alaskan crude oil (so the pipeline was built).

Bill Nye, the alledged scientist, is working on those equations right now. Maybe they should just build desalinization plants, cheaper and longer lasting, won't just melt away.

I think John Wayne had a better idea. He kept some ice on his yacht, chopped off of glaciers, for his alcoholic beverages.

But if it melts sea level will rise and flood Dubai. Women, minorities, and Muslims will be hardest hit.

They had better get them an UN environmental impact license with AlBore’s seal of approval on it.

Why not just build some super tankers to haul ice.

I think the whole idea of towing huge icebergs is so they don’t melt before arrival at the destination.
