I never really understood how bitcoin had any value at all. It just seemed a scam from the start to me. Get people to spend real money to buy imagined money and then pocket the real money.

Bitcoin is based on a global market with a finite resource pool. It’s a virtual commodity. The inventor of Bitcoin has stated definitively that at some point the last Bitcoin will be “mined” and the value of the currency will be based on market fluctuations. 1 BTC is currently worth ~US$1700. The value has been as low as $200 and varies greatly month-by-month.

There are plenty of legitimate business who accept BTC as well.

It is not exclusive to criminals, and remember that Bitcoin is based on a blockchain register. This means that Bitcoin isn’t really anonymous; it’s pseudonymous. The blockchain has records of all transactions. Tracing the endpoints can be done, but it does require significantly more legwork than traditional currency tracking. The government doesn’t like it when the People make their jobs harder.

Is Bitcoin how the ransomware hackers get paid without getting caught?

Actually, I think you understand Bitcoin perfectly.

“I have it made in the shade.”

not really; your portfolio lacks Dutch tulips and investment sardines. probably a few dot com startups would round things out a bit as well.

The value has been as low as $200 and varies greatly month-by-month.

Is anyone advertizing Bitcoin as "sound money"? Anything whose buying power "varies greatly month-by-month" is not sound money.

Most of the people I know, myself included, look at Bitcoin as a volatile investment instrument. It changes by the minute, and if you are in the business of “timing” your investments, you can get in and out and make a few hundred dollars in one afternoon. It’s “beer money” in the grand scheme of things. I don’t know anyone investing serious cash into it.
