town into homeless magnet By Joseph J. Kolb Published May 17, 2017 Fox News

NOW PLAYING New poll shows shift on marijuana legalization From his sidewalk vantage point in front of an outdoor equipment store in downtown Durango, Colo., Matthew Marinseck has seen a transformation in this mountain resort town.

The picturesque town near the New Mexico border, once a vibrant, upscale community dotted with luxury hotels, is being overrun by panhandlers – thanks, in part, to the legalization of marijuana.

The town suddenly became a haven for recreational pot users, drawing in transients, panhandlers and a large number of homeless drug addicts, according to officials and business owners. Many are coming from New Mexico, Arizona and even New York.

“Legalized marijuana has drawn a lot of kids here from other states and the impact has not all been good,” said Marinseck, 58, while holding a cardboard sign asking for “help.”

But this can’t be. I thought legalized marijuana would bring in jobs, lower crime, and create the world’s first Doritos festival?

"Two years ago, we were in Colorado Springs"

Ditto that. Got to see people begging all over the intersections and someone we met noted if you go to give them money they would ask for a "bud". It is effecting industries where the piss test is everything, and if you want details freep me privately. I can't get to deep on this, however someone I know of note ( in this arena ) noted they would be surprised if the whole piss-test has a lawsuit to challenge it all the way. That is not good...

I have heard that a recent study suggests that water is wet.

If you don’t want to work you go where the living and the dope is easy. Beach towns in warm climates are loaded with bums. Colorado towns have the sweet scent of hemp to lure them in. I do not wish to see legalization here in Florida. We have enough of these useless bodies already.

Good weather, easy to live with minimal “housing”...

Wait until winter. The weather gets pretty cold and snowy. They will be gone.

I’m guessing if they look closer, they’ll find out these are just “Deadheads” who were following the smell.

Farmington, NM, which is about 50 miles south of Durango, has around 45,000 population. Durango is around 17,000.

Sweden has a complete ban on marijuana, including for medicinal purposes. Something else must explain their suicidal tendencies.

____________________________________________________________________

“Marijuana laws in Sweden completely ban the drug. The country has laws against any and all possession, sale, transport, and cultivation of cannabis.

Many Swedes do not distinguish between weed and harder drugs and few Swedes smoke weed.”

“legalized marijuana would bring in jobs”

It brought in more tax revenue, which is what counts. Actually, the pot factories pay pretty well, I guess.

We here in California have seen an influx of homeless millennials since pot was legalized here too. A two mile stretch along the Santa Ana River in Anaheim by Angels Stadium has turned into a homeless camp the last two months. There are over 2,000 stoned out millennials there now in boxes and tents. The often harass and aggressively panhandle the bicyclist on the bike trail along river too.

That doesn’t matter one bit. Pot is as readily available in Farmington as it is in Durango. And cheaper, too.

Dealers have no borders.

I love Durango. The old, pre dope addict Durango. Even Hickenlooper said that states should not applaud their decision to legalize that filthy crap. He said only time will tell the long term impact. It didn't take that long, did it?

I just got back from Vail yesterday. Went fishing in Edwards. Vail doesn't allow these dope dispensaries. Smart.

Only a fool or an addict would contend that marijuana is not addictive. And we seem to have many of both on FR.

This is a bunch of crap.

Durango has been a semi-hippie ski town since the 70’s.

Before that it was a drab, boring, burnt out mining town trapped in the 50’s.

Maybe this duck of a reporter has never been there before but it’s actually a lot better now then it was 30 years ago: nice restaurants, upscale housing that’s not cheap (unless you want to move to Cortez), and the ski area is actually reasonably well run now.
