“Don’t Give Up on Me,” Carney Man Succumbs to Rattlesnake Bite
KFOR ^ | JUNE 9, 2017 | CASSANDRA SWEETMAN

A devastating loss for a family in Carney after a man died from a rattlesnake bite.

Jeremy Knox, 38, was working on a bread truck he wanted to restore when he was bitten by the snake.

Initially, he didn't know what bit him. His wife, Jessica Miller-Knox, took him to a nearby hospital.

"Went to a hospital and told them it was some sort of bite, we didn't know, but that something was wrong," Jessica said. "They looked at it and sent us home."

The pain grew worse and the next day they went to Integris Baptist Medical Center where he was immediately treated for a rattlesnake bite.

"They gave him 22 vials [of anti-venom]," Jessica said. "From what I understand, they start on a low dose, and a low dose is six. They said they thought they had it under control."

But it was too late. A few days later, surrounded by friends and family, Jeremy died in his sleep.

"The last thing I said was I love him and he said, 'don't give up on me,'" Jessica said.

Now she and the four children he's leaving behind want to make sure he's remembered for his hard work and stubborn attitude. Jessica said she plans to continue to grow the business and realize his ambitions.

"My partner is gone, but his dreams are not," she said.

A memorial ride is planned for next week.

"So that he knows how much he meant to us," Jessica said.

I hate the ambulance chasers as much as the next FReeper, but would she have grounds for a medical malpractice lawsuit?

Boy Scout Handbook covers this, along with the cheap snake bite first aid kit.

Progress in the 21st Century? Many more unself-relient fools.

There was a question of Jeopardy the other day about snake bites. The state with the most deaths was Florida.

I hate the word partner for husband or wife. I have a business partner. A chess partner. A tennis partner.

Husband or wife is unique.

Anyway, a very sad story.

Maybe, but I’d be reluctant to convict someone for a missed diagnosis. If victim came in and said he had been bitten by a snake and they ignored it, then yes.

Kinda rare, these days, to die from a rattler.

May he rest in peace and may the rattler die of indigestion.

Makes me kinda wonder...if he couldn't tell them he was bit by a rattler at the time he went to the hospital, how did they know he'd been bitten later...when they administered anti-venin?

I've never been surprised by a rattler, mainly 'cause I let them know I'm there and they'll usually let me know they are there.

A damned Copperhead...I'll kill every one I see.

Period.

I hate those damned sneaky things.

In fact, I hate them so bad, that when I see a King Snake on another part of my land, I transplant them closer to my house.

I found a big King just a week or so ago while bushhogging...surprised it in the process of eating another snake.

Couldn't tell what it was from the tip of the tail, but I hope it was a Copperhead.

My sister got bit by a copperhead about three years ago. It was dark, and she was walking a basket of laundry outside to the washer in the garage. She said initially it stung, and she said it looked like it might be a spider bite. Within an hour, she was in the ER with nausea, fever, and chills. They had to keep pumping antivenin into her, and she basically used up the whole supply the hospital had before she stabilized. She went though months of hell trying to recover. Had ongoing renal failure issues. Antibiotics to fight off sepsis and gangrene. It's not something I'd wish on anybody. I feel for him, and condolences to his family.

No, the term partner compliments the husband or wife. It's already understood that he/she is your husband/wife. He/She is also your best friend, and the two of you are literally that, a partnership.

But I can see your point though.

I read some time ago that more people in the U.S. are bitten by copperheads than all other snakes combined. I am pretty sure that North Carolina has the most venomous snake bites but not the most deaths.

I haven’t seen the figures but I would bet more die from rattlers than any other snake bites, at least here in the U.S.

If they make the mistake/negligence, it is not ambulance chasing. It is an iatrogenic death.

Kinda rare, these days, to die from a rattler.

On average, about five people per year die from snake bites in the United States, mostly rattlers but copperheads, corals and mambas as well.

Are you saying the folks at the hospital gave him a snake bite?

Otherwise i don't think that word means what you you think it means.

Copperheads are a favorite for king snakes. If you have a king around, you won’t have to worry about venomous snakes or rats. Friend of mine in MS sent me an e-mail the other day; he was jogging on a trail in the woods and saw/heard some kind of commotion in the brush; he stopped and began approaching slowly. In a few steps he saw what was causing the ruckus; a king snake was in the process of killing and eating a copperhead.

My wife was bitten by a copperhead several years ago on her heel. It was a single mark that looked a lot like a mesquite thorn gouge.

Dry bite resulted in 18 hrs in the hospital and $40K with no antivenom administered as best we could tell.

Copperheads are sneaky, they lay low and wear camouflage. Rattlers generally give you a wide berth and tell you "Hey I'm here do not come closer"

Stop and they go away.

Kill every Cotton mouth you see, they are just nasty

Bread truck/boat gun

Beats hucking rocks at it

Yeah, I'm not sure of the statistics, either. It's not one of those things you really stop and ponder until you or someone you know gets bitten. But it's not something you generally bounce back from and are back at work the next day. Or the day, or the next day, ad nauseum.
