Inside ‘The Mummy’s’ Troubles: Tom Cruise Had Excessive Control
Variety ^ | June 14, 2017 | Ramin Setoodeh, and Brent Lang

There were few signs that a major blockbuster was about to premiere when “The Mummy” rolled into Manhattan last week. The marquee of the AMC Loews Lincoln Square Theatres had gone blank. The carpet was totally covered with black plastic. Security only let guests past barricades after quizzing them about what they were there to see, and everybody had to walk through two imposing metal detectors.

Inside the theater, Tom Cruise was jubilant, as he stood in front of the crowd. “Hey y’all,” said the 54-year-old actor. He introduced Alex Kurtzman, the film’s director, as well as the cast members, who stood quietly as Cruise delivered a 10-minute improvised speech. “Movies aren’t made by single people,” he said. “It’s a team effort.”

The RT critics rating is 16%, the audience rating is 44%.

The critics also ripped on The Edge of Tomorrow, which I thought was an above average SF film.

I couldn’t watch “Valkyrie”, because I just couldn’t fathom Cruise playing von Stauffenberg.

'Edge of Tomorrow' was a good Sci-Fi movie that died at the box office because it had Tom Cruise.

I liked it very much, and I thought Tom Cruise did a very good job in it.

As a matter of fact, I have been taking another look at Tom Cruise over the last few years. He has starred in quite a few movies that I liked.

"Oblivion" was pretty good. His Jack Reacher movies have been decent. I liked some of his "Mission Impossible" movies.

That being said, I wasn't impressed with "The Mummy", but I don't think He was the problem with it.

Flipping the Mummy from a Male to a Female pissed me off because I saw it as another example of "Political correctness" changing existing storylines for the sake of "diversity."

It had other problems as well.

I have seen Edge of Tomorrow and even though Cruise does a good job in it, I would agree with you. But there are other problems with that movie other than Cruise, the studio just didn't put an effort behind it, and gave it a lousy title.

I thought Oblivion was good too. It was a homage to 70s and 80s SF stories using 21st century special effects.

It’ll be a global hit, but it would have been better served at a lower price. Part of the “shared universe” thinking is making it up on the further movies, which might not be good. They really should have been able to be at least basically profitable on domestic alone.

Univsersal is banking on Cruise's, Bardem and Depp's international /worldwide appeal to save the series.

I do agree that the budgets will come down dramatically after this domestic result

You should watch “Valkyrie” because it is a good movie and Tom is good in it.

Tom is a nut and I don’t respect his Scientology beliefs at all, but he showed his range as an actor in films like “Born on the Fourth of July” and “Vanilla Sky.” He has another movie coming out about Barry Seal which might be interesting.

Like marketing it as Live. Die Repeat. Edge of Tomorrow?

Didn't help. But Tom Cruise is poison in North America outside 'Mission Impossible'.

Jack Reacher movies underperformed. And whoever heard of 'Knight and Day'?

It’s amazing how many “flops” boil down to “you spent how much”. Depp’s Lone Ranger is my favorite example, it’s actually the 11th highest grossing westerns ever (was 10th, but last year’s Magnificent 7 remake bumped it) but with a $215 million budget it needed an act of God to be profitable, and He chose not to. At a realistic budget it could have started a franchise.

“Born on the Fourth of July” perpetrates innumerable deadly left-wing myths about Vietnam, many of which sprang from the mind of opportunist Jogn Kerry and his liar minions. Instead of watching Born On again, Read B.G. Burkett’s STOLEN VALOR. It’ll knock your socks off.

My curiosity on that one is 100% morbid. I’m sure it will be awful, I just want to know how awful.

That is all true, and it was an Oliver Stone film, but Tom did very well as an actor. He wasn’t Tom Cruise playing Tom Cruise in that one.

I watched thismovie the other night. It’s not a bad movie and I enjoyed it just as much as I did Wonder Woman.
Tom Cruise is definitely too old for the role and one of the main problems with Tom Cruise is he is the same character in every single movie he’s in so if you’ve seen him once.......lol
