111 terminally ill patients took their own lives in first 6 months of California right-to-die law

A total of 111 people in California took their own lives using lethal prescriptions during the first six months of a law that allows terminally ill people to request life-ending drugs from their doctors, according to data released Tuesday.

A snapshot of the patients who took advantage of the law mirrors what’s been seen in Oregon, which was the first state to legalize the practice nearly two decades ago. Though California is far more diverse than Oregon, the majority of those who have died under aid-in-dying laws in both states were white, college-educated cancer patients older than 60.

The End of Life Option Act made California the fifth state in the nation to allow patients with less than six months to live to request end-of-life drugs from their doctors.

Physician-assisted deaths made up 6 out of every 10,000 deaths in California between June and December 2016, according to state data. That’s much lower than the 2016 rate in Oregon, where lethal prescriptions accounted for 37 per 10,000 deaths.

But the findings have done little to calm the debate over whether allowing doctors to prescribe lethal medications is acceptable medical practice. …

I am not ending up like my parents & no law (or lack of a law) will stop me. The plans are in my place - my decision, Big Government will not stop me.

Yeah as terrible as assisted suicide is to many, it’s not quite decimating the ranks of the elderly yet.

And I can’t say what I would do i all I was in was HORRIFIC pain and was going to die in 3 months.

My mother was a nurse and people with cancer begged her to kill them ALL DAY.

There but for the grace of God...

I’m pretty frank on the board. About a year after my hear injury, the headaches and stabbing pain were so BEYOND BELIEF that I made a half hearted attempt at offing myself. I took 40 xanax. That wasn’t gonna kill me.

But I did think in my head it might

And YES, the pain was THAT BAD that I couldn’t think straight.

Thank God in his grace, he took the pain away more and more each year and now it is very tolerable.

I let God judge people’s souls. I find humans aren’t that good a it.

Being terminally ill isn’t living I understand their reasoning the sting of death shouldn’t be a drawn out ordeal seen to many family go that way.

I cannot find a single example in the Bible of a righteous man or woman taking his/her own life, even those with presumable cause to do so (e.g. King David suffered from poor circulation and was cold all the time; the prophet Elisha died of an illness).

And here we have liberals accusing others of what they do.

I’m talking about the liberal commercial where they have Paul Ryan pushing granny down a cliff. Yet, the REAL CASES have the liberal states doing “exactly that”, with the cliff being the metaphor for the liberals’ “lethal injections”. Somebody ought to produce a counter commercial to show the real truth of the death squads that the democrats have going.

So so sorry to learn about your situation with horrific pain. Good to hear the pain is not so bad now.

Luckily, My own horrific pain situation occurred 25 years ago when I had gall stones. Have not had a repeat since the gall bladder was removed. One night, I was at a ski-chalet, with no phone service to call for ambulance. The pain was so bad, I begged my wife to off me. Of course she would not do it, being a dedicated nurse herself. But I can somewhat relate to how you felt during horrific pain episodes.

Take care and best luck.

Doctors doubling as murderers is never a good idea. Getting the medical profession and the government involved with killing people just because people are old, sick, depressed, in pain, mentally ill or whatever is a known slippery slide to involuntary killings. Happens every place that legalizes “doctor assisted suicide”.

Anyone who wants to commit suicide can easily do it without a doctor or government.

People whine “Well what about (fill in the blank helpless person) who can’t stick head in oven/breathe carbon monoxide in car/shoot themselves/find drugs to OD on/etc? Shouldn’t they be allowed to commit suicide too?”

Answer: Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Plus, stop eating and drinking, especially if you’re already terminally ill, and you’ll go pretty soon. Many terminally ill patients do this normally, towards the end of life. Having been a hospice volunteer, I’ve read about this and seen it.

People who want government and the medical profession involved in killing people need to calibrate their moral compass and adjust their cognitive thinking apparatus.

Oh of course, just “put them to sleep” like an old dog or horse with broken leg.

Hell, many peoples’ entire lives are a long drawn out ordeal. I guess a lot of people just need killing; of course for their own good....

In the Netherlands and Belgium, people are offed without their consent.

All for their own good, of course. No quality of life and all that.

It is in several European countries. Dementia, mental illness, terminally ill, chronically ill, depressed....the list grows all the time. Patients don’t have to ask, either. Just get offed.

You’re a flaming hypocrite.

You and anyone else can easily kill themselves any time without the government or medical profession involved.

What YOU want is suicide to get the government stamp of approval and doctors to act as murderers.

Just man up and do it yourself without involving government, doctors, taxpayers and various medical boards/blah blah.

Bleating about the “State” not getting involved is sheer hypocrisy. You and other pro-death people WANT the gov involved. Why? Makes you feel innocent, virtuous? I have no idea. But you and your ilk are the ones who demand government and doctors be involved in something that should your business and your business ALONE.

You think no one committed suicide before “doctor assisted suicide” got invented?

Get a freaking grip.

Having the option and forcing someone are two completely different things, one is completely wrong.

And in every country where doctor assisted suicide is legalized, the voluntary quickly includes involuntary.

And, btw, anyone who wants to can commit suicide without doctors and government getting involved.
