Breast cancer is one of the most common tumor types, and metastasis greatly increases the risk of death from this disease. By studying the process of intravasation or entry of cells into the vasculature, Karagiannis et al. discovered that, in addition to killing tumor cells, chemotherapy treatment can also increase intravasation. Groups of cells collectively known as tumor microenvironment of metastasis (TMEM) can serve as gateways for tumor cells entering the vasculature, and the authors discovered that several types of chemotherapy can increase the amounts of TMEM complexes and circulating tumor cells in the bloodstream. The researchers also determined that a drug called rebastinib can interfere with TMEM activity and help overcome the increased risk of cancer cell dissemination.

We have a lot of FReepers who are fighting cancer, and a lot of us also question the oncology world of today. It is my prayer that patients and their families don't get cowed by white coats and do plenty of research as they choose their treatments. And that prevention and cure be found swiftly.
Sure, I agree. It would be great to be able to look back in a more enlightened time when we have unlocked the knowledge of how to make the body heal itself, and look at the concept of pumping poison into the body to kill the invader as a barbaric approach, like cutting off a leg damaged by gunfire just to make sure it doesn’t get infected.
But this is what we have now.
Yaelle, people are free to refuse treatment. If they think that is better for them, I wish them the best. I don’t doubt that some number, however small who take that path will survive, treatment by apricot pits, vitamins, faith healing, whatever they decide.
I think it is a foolhardy approach. But it is their choice. We all have responsibility for our own health.
As a cancer survivor, may I add my prayer that all cancer victims realize that their best chance at life lies with the “white coats,” and the path to a quick death is usually via “alternative” medicine. Please do what your oncologist recommends, and if you are exploring concomitant alternatives, please keep in mind that alternative medicine can actually cause you much harm if you are undergoing chemotherapy, so please discuss EVERYTHING with your oncologist, even seemingly innocent substances can be fatal.
Much of what we think we know about cancer is simply wrong. And the standard treatments are medieval.

To a point I agree. My wife is a 3x fighter of cancer.
You or your caregiver must be your advocate. Without fail you must always know how the patient is feeling and reacting to medicine. We tried of many occasions the 100% white coat treatment and unless you know what is going into the body and what the effects of the disease or medicine, the doctor or nurse will just say “treat the symptom”.
Not good enough. Always question who is taking care of you and ask why are you giving me this medicine? What will it do to me?
Finding the right balance in life most important. I believe never giving up and never taking no for an answer.
We sure do. I advocate prevention in the form of good health and nutrition habits --the younger you start the better. Not everyone agrees. Some would prefer eating sugary and/or greasy stuff, smoking and drinking too much to staying healthy. And they hate you if you try to explain the risks. Oh well.
I don't know what I would do if I turned up with some form of cancer. Probably go whole-hog into conventional medical treatment.
Its an everlasting disgrace that medicine has not found a cure much less a better more humane treatment than the medieval chemo.Take welfare money and throw it at research.

I realize that I’m a bit cynical. But for some time now I’ve been convinced there will never be a cure for cancer or heart disease. There’s too much money in them. Both of them, and even others, have become gigantic INDUSTRIES; and they WILL guard their turf and extend it.

I agree with preventation, but as you know, that is no guarantee.
Like I said, if someone wants to choose a non-traditional path, that would be their choice.
I work in health care, and I understand the risks and benefits as I see them. I think people can see it differently.
What I don’t appreciate is people who knock health care and demonize it as greedy people looking to suck patients dry of their money while feeding them unproven snake oil in return.
That gets me pretty hot.
Much of what we know about damned near anything is wrong after we find the right answer.
Some of us have lived in the space of time where we get to see this dynamic in action, an accepted and respected medical treatment supplanted by something that really works, and looking back, it looks like quackery.
But it is almost never quackery. It is simply the desperation of trying to have some answer when nothing works, instead of no answer.
That is the history of medicine. Over and over. When we get to the point where we don’t have to slice open someone’s chest, but can instead issue commands to the body it understands and can repair itself, EVERYTHING we ever did is going to look medieval.
Two beautiful women, friends of mine, got cancer at about the same time. One went to India to pray with her guru, the other went right to the hospital for surgery. Guess which one survived. An excellent lesson for me. I do my best to stay healthy, and if I get sick, I’ll rely on docs.
My doc, btw, writes me orders for several nutritional supplements instead of prescription meds, insists that I sip water with electrolytes all day, and understands that I know what I’m doing. We both go to the same gym. I am, btw, a very very old lady, jogging into eighth decade. With attitude!

I am impressed with anyone who can jog at all. I can do a ten mile walk, but my back can’t even take the smallest of jogs...
That’s great. I’ll bet that keeps your bones pretty strong, too!
As for serious health care interventions, I think it is a personal decision, and I hope I don’t have to make those kinds of decisions very soon, though if we are lucky (or unlucky, depending on your point of view) we have to make them eventually.
I have worked nearly my entire adult life in Medicine, and I think I understand the risks and benefits enough to ask the right questions without bogging myself down in hand-wringing. I made the choice years ago to spend my money and energy in Chiropractic for my chronic back issues (since I was 16 and hurt my back) and that has paid off in spades. That was about 28 years ago when I went for the first time, and I wish I had done it sooner. I would consider trying acupuncture, too. But that is about it. I have tried herbal remedies for a variety of things, but...traditional western medicine has done good by me, so I am sticking with it.
