I started young. Riding one of these now:

Went cross country back in the early 80's on a Yamaha 750. Passed lots of Harley riders on the side of the road turning a wrench. Changed my plugs and oil in SanFran and kept on rinding.

I love that Harley has kept American bikes in the game, but I'll always love my Yamahas.

Back in the 70's I ran around Europe on one of these

The sidecar didn't have the windscreen or bumper but did have a spare on back and it had been painted red, yellow and black. In the Winter it did OK even kept your feet warm with those opposing heads.

The difference between a guy who likes Harleys and a guy who likes import bikes is that Harley guys like to tinker with machines.

Harleys are like little hot rods. You can get custom parts for anything and everything. It's a lot of fun, but you're not going to out-engineer the engineers. This often leads to unexpected trouble.

So the imports are generally moving about unmolested in factory stock condition while Harleys are hardly ever left alone. Stock Harleys are quite reliable.
