My final assignment before I retired from the Air Force was commander of an engineering unit (all Civil Service). I had 100 engineers and technicians in the unit. About 30 were Blacks. Very "diverse." All, including the Blacks, were competent in their profession. I never saw that being "diverse" had anything to do with their competence, nor with the overall performance of the unit. Diversity is NOT our strength. Competence is.
