Indians, casinos, and decent folk?

Posted on 08/08/2017 7:50:32 AM PDT by LouAvul

I'm in Oklahoma and we have casinos everywhere. It seems.

But a tribe has surreptitiously acquired a small piece of property in my particular town and built facilities for a restaurant. Now it's been revealed they intend to start a casino, and our councilmen say there's nothing they can do.

Even though gambling is illegal in my town, these people are protected by the federal government to open up one of their filthy, prefabricated, typically "native American" dumps? They say they are, and they say as long as they comply with the feds, they can do whatever they want.

I'm going to contact my Congresscritters. Is there any precedent for shutting down a gambling establishment?

I never shot and Indian and am tired of giving these people special consideration for what my ancestors might, or might not have, done.

I never do well in those Indian-owned casinos. It's like they have all those games and slots "tight" if you know what I mean. The buffets and food options are nothing special either. They are definitely getting their "reparations" from the white man, let me tell you.

Las Vegas is a much better overall experience, from the food, the lodging, the gaming and the overall atmosphere. It's fairly cheap to travel there as well.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned but I don’t think it is ever a good strategy to broadcast your intention to murder people before the fact . . . but that just me.

One of the legal quandaries is, if they are allowed to build casinos on their own tribal territory, are they therefore allowed to buy land outside their territory and then claim that as tribal land too. I remember a case in California that a tribe whose land was up in the mountains away from any highways wanted permission to buy land for a casino on the highway, and were denied. But it was being litigated and I don’t know how it all came out.

I have seen a couple of cases in the press where, in an Indian casino, someone won big and immediately they slapped an “out of order” sign on the machine and refused to pay. I haven’t heard of that happening in Vegas, not to say it hasn’t, but I haven’t heard of it.

The casino will create a lot of jobs and bring in a lot of money to your town. Some have great restaurants and bring in top flight entertainers.

There is nothing you can do about it.

Even the mob which owns Vegas and Reno could not stop all of the casinos from building and doing business in California.

Well, the Native Americans were a peaceful group who never hurt the land, and only shot buffalo to eat them. And they were never at war with each other.

How can you be angry at such a nice group of folk....?

I never understand how Indians are treated as special.

I understand about Indians reservations. I don’t understand how Indians can do things that are illegal for the rest of us.

How is it legal, or giving us all equal protection of the laws, that people of certain ancestry are allowed to have a gambling casino, when people of other ancestries are not allowed to run that sort of business???

As I said, while this is all legal, I don’t understand the legal justification under our laws.

The land is probably designated as part of their ‘reservation’.

I live about a mile from one of the casinos. It does bring in a lot of visitors to the area and it does employ a good number of people. [I have never been inside it — have no interest in gambling.]

What are you talking about? I said I never shot an Indian and am tired of paying for what my ancestors might have done. Ancestors who might have been the ones who shot Indians, as in the Indian Removal Act.

Reading comprehension isn't your strong point, is it?

Just a threat to decent writing and basic sentence structure.

Oh my.

If I wrote like that, I’d be embarrassed.

A casino went up in our city a few years ago. They refused to meet various building codes, including plumbing. However, when they demanded city water and sewer, the city informed them they could not and would not supply water and sewer to a noncompliant structure. Casino fought it, but eventually brought their building up to code, at least as regards plumbing. :-)

Another way to scalp-um white man who can’t control self?

The location might be the only thing that could be pressed to change. They might be forced to move the casino operation out of the no-gambling zone. But not if the city has been bought off, etc.

What are you babbling about? I don’t want to gamble and could care less about your trip to vegas. I want to know how decent citizens can stop indians from building another one of their myriad dumpy prefab typically indian architecture casinos.
