Well it's not over. That said, what do Big City Freepers recommend??? 1) Bug out and head for high ground and get stuck in traffic 2) Get cases of water/chlorine tablets and pull that inflatable fishing boat out of storage 3) something else?

I can tell you absolutely that if I lived in flood zone and saw dem mayor trying to downplay a claim about city council meeting talking about 50 inches..I would have given serious thought to bugging out. I think there were enough signs that this was a seriously dangerous situation

You can’t bug out. You’re undoubtedly surrounded by water too deep for a car or pickup truck to navigate.

Btw..I have lived through a houston hurricane when I was young..dumb..and stupid...didnt know if I needed to get in bathtub like with tornadoes. I dont think i did anything -not even get major supplies. Probably at least got gas and some food.

Not all flood zones are created equal. Evacuation candidates should use common sense and not be panicked into a stampede because of a government power grab. Government loves to flex its muscles in natural disasters because it dreads having its incompetence and fecklessness exposed and because it feeds on the myth that no one can manage without the omnicompetent state.

Common sense FReeper advises if your house was flooded during Rita or Alicia or any of the other bazillion weather events in the past 50 years, then you need to get the heck outta Dodge ahead of the traffic.

During my hurricane stint..vehicle had water to top of engine but no apartments got water

Not everyone needs to evacuate..but if you own a home you should have a good idea if you are vulnerable

Speaking of New Orleans, I’m not so sure they are “in play” here. If the storm goes a little more Eastward then predicted, they could be in a world a hurt, they already predicted to get up to 10 inches of rain as it is.

And, oh by the way......

If you haven’t bugged out by now - you are a week too late.

“Last and above all, I do not rely on the government to tell me when to go.”

We live on the county line and once watched the other county out in trucks with loud speakers going up and down on the next street over. The local news had been warning people for days. I called our sheriff and they denied there was any flooding so they weren’t going to do anything.

We called grandma, packed and met on higher ground. The next day, the water had risen 23 feet and someone’s kitchen cabinets were on our deck.

maybe they're asking as more of an exercise in planning for the future or to find out your own personal thinking on the topic.

So if city council knew it would be be bad with possible 50 inches of rain..but couldnt have people panic like Rita...so downplayed severity Should they get blame for not telling residents reality

The city heard the same weather reports as everyone else. If the citizens didn't haven enough common sense to get outta Dodge, then they have only themselves to blame.

Just like that muzzie blaming Trump for a Houston grocery store was out of bread at the last minute Friday.

Everyone knows when a bird tinkles, Houston floods. If your house has flooded any time during the past 50 and the weather channel is telling you there's historic rain headed toward you, then GET OUT!

Houston doesn’t have zoning laws. What could possibly go wrong? If your house has been flooded twice in the past 50 years, you shouldn’t be able to get flood insurance. Same with any other natural disaster.

No, Gov. Abbott was way out ahead of Harvey. By Thursday, he’d already identified 30 counties that would need help. He had already mobilized the NG, waived fees to state parks for evacuees, had Parks and Wildlife personnel and boats at the ready, brought in buses, was talking to mayors about mandatory evacuations and etc.

I have often wondered about the validity of caulking all the doors and windows shut from outside and sealing all openings like dryer vents, sump drains etc.

With a modern, we sealed house, you won’t seal everything but the I’ll bet it would hold lots of water back.

Conversely, the water pressure might crush the house if it can’t equalize.
