Perhaps so but spanking, when done properly, is highly effective and has zero adverse affect on the child. I believe you might be getting influenced by more liberal methods of child-raising.

I also stress that spanking is done early in childhood to be effective. As another poster here pointed out, if you are still spanking older children, you did something wrong and at that point, it has little effect as older children are sophisticated enough to know that you will never really hurt them. I believe my own children did not get spanked past the age of 10. By then, they were respectful and well-behaved. Our teenage children were a joy to be around. We had none of the drama or serious issues that many parents of teenagers have.

Worked for me. Temper tantrum, filled a glass of water walked over. Tantrum didn’t stop upended it over the head. I didn’t have to get angry, in fact we all usually laughed because they looked like wet hens. I mopped up the floor and they learned to control their tempers. All’s well that ends well.

The son I referenced earlier once needed two cups of water one after another once, but even he learned to laugh at himself soaking wet. After the first time or two going to the sink was message enough.

Depends on the child not the parent.

That is very flowery but is very false. I would hurt my children to keep them safe. That is real love because it is easier not to take the stand but in your heart you know that if you don’t hold the line they will not grow up honorable and self disciplined.

Children are comfortable with constancy with expectations and - & + consequences. Spankings are a part of that continuum. If the threat is enough fine & dandy if they need the concrete example fine also.

Most parents hurt their children in many ways much more severely and with greater consequences than the occasional spanking. #1 they lie to them: actual lies, lies of convenience, lies of omission, comfortable lies, self serving lies. #2 they starve them of attention. #3 they fail to discipline them and to teach them respect for others. #4 they fail to provide an example of honor and of holding oneself to a standard, examining motives and striving to do the right thing not the easy thing.

The sweetest parents are more dangerous in their honeyed neglect and self-serving lies than the parent who cares enough to engage with and discipline their child. So this malarkey that parents will never hurt you and that that’s what children need is trite and tripe. Its a cop out brought to us by the parents as pals meme.

Parents who don’t spank, get ignorant, self-willed, smart-asses for children.

Maybe the left thinks this is “smart”. That’s dumb.

I’m against it. It teaches children that their parents are willing to physically hurt them. That’s bad.

No, it's good...The threat of pain is often a pretty good deterrent...

I’m against spanking. Both of my parents spanked me, but only my mother made me choose which weapon she would use. I doubt that it lowered my IQ, but it certainly made me fearful.

Children are comfortable with constancy with expectations and - & + consequences.

Correct.

Spankings are a part of that continuum.

Incorrect.

Your post exemplified sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Spoken like the truly foolish Macbeth, ignoring the messenger bringing the news of the moving of the woods against him, heralding his death. No architect of paradise he (or she), clinging to the ignorance of the Bard, while others cling to the wisdom of the Bible and its Author.

And your track record so far of implementing your Spockian philosophy is . . . what? Tell me, what will your tomorrows be like?

Citing God’s Word as though it was intended to answer all questions, including scientific questions, is to twist and abuse it.

That is only your opinion but the fact is the bible answers THAT question just fine...No ambiguity whatsoever...Your problem is that the word of God is not your authority...

I see you have a deeply held opinion; it is not supported by my experiences or logic. Peace.

Careful, Arthur. You may not believe in God, and you even have his permission not to believe in what He says (free will), but those of us who know Him understand that He particularly doesn’t like it when you make fun of Him. (Gospel of Matthew, 12:31) You may never see any punishment in this world, but you won’t enjoy being corrected in the next.

How much were you spanked or physically abused as a child? You act pretty messed up, so, I assume you were constantly physically abused.

I think that you have Arthur confused with another, now long gone from here, poster...sinkspur.

Arthur is well known for a thread he posted an extremely long time ago, that said something to the effect: DON'T REPLY TO THIS THREAD/DON'T POST BACK TO ME. LOL

But no, he hasn't replied to my query. If he had, I was going to ask him how he would keep an 18 month old from trying to touch a hot stove, without a slap on the offending hand, etc.! Sometimes a spanking or a slap on a hand is the ONLY thing that works!

“BLM folks were all encouraged to do what they do w/o any adult leadership/discipline.”

Actually, blacks tend to be vicious and relentless in physical punishment - the least little thing gets a beating, and that means frequently. Usually by the woman, because OTOH, they don’t have a man around.

So, they are the opposite example. The weenies vs. the vicious parents often end up with the same basic results - uncontrolled brats with no respect.

The middle road is the best, as always.

Some can, some require more drastic measures to get their attention.
