Nothing Says ‘Jersey’ Like a Cannoli-Waffle Eating Contest
New Jersey 101.5 ^ | August 28, 2017 | Dennis Malloy

Judi and I were honored to be asked to judge a cannoli/waffle eating contest at Pier Village on Sunday.

It was a picture perfect summer day. The beach was packed. People in bathing suits walking around everywhere. And the line was out the door at Coney Waffle in Long Branch.

The owners Joe and Mike revived their mom’s old waffle machine from Coney Island in Brooklyn. They filled two hot dog bun shaped waffles with cannoli cream and WOW! About a dozen brave men and one woman stepped on stage to see who could eat in three minutes.

Needless to say a good time was had by all!

Does taking aspirin before ya down the cannoli’s help with the sugar headache?

I remember those days in the Bronx, Fordham section, Calavolpe (sp) made the best cannoli. Also Hackensack Pastry in NJ. IMO. Don’t know if they are still in business.

Cannolis are delicious. I might have to get some at Alessi Bakery today...

Something missing there.

I remember those days in the Bronx, Fordham section, Calavolpe (sp) [Colavolpe] made the best cannoli. Also Hackensack Pastry in NJ. IMO. Don’t know if they are still in business.

They apparently are not around anymore, at least based on this piece below that I found...

“Many is the time that, happily laden with Dough, Chickens, Basil, Tomatoes, Olives, Olive Oil, Finocchio, Tonno, Zucchini and other luxuries of Italian comestibles, Nonna, Sis and I would walk over to the shrine of Italian Pastries — COLAVOLPE’S!!!

Sis and I couldn’t wait!!! Their lemon ice and Torrone ice was fabulous!!! A big (well, we were little kids and everything looked big to us) clean store with mirrors, glass counters, displays of wedding almonds wrapped in various types of lace and ribbons.. and.. the cannoli shells sitting on the counter. The man behind the counter would fill the Cannolis to order. They were the BEST!!!!

It was a rare day when the Cannolis actually made it home with us— we’d usually eat them on the way to the next store, or if Nonna was visiting our “aunt” Assunta (which she did quite often whenever we’d go shopping on Arthur Avenue) we’d proudly carry the Cannoli in a box to Assunta’s.

Sadly, Colavolpe’s is now gone, but it persisted well into the 80’s. It is a wonderful memory now.”

Granted those bakery cannolis are sumptuous.

So howzabout a bacon cannoli?

Looks like it might actually be pretty good. Thought it was a joke at first.

Thank You for the walk down memory lane. I was born in 1944 and lived at 185th and Southern Blvd, near the Bronx Zoo. Mt Carmel saw good and bad times for my family, with weddings and funerals. I had relatives who were vendors at Arthur Ave and we did much shopping there after a neat trolley ride, trolley tracks along Southern Blvd to Fordham Rd. Think it was a nickel ride. Most of my family, prior to their ‘exodus’ to NJ, lived in the Fordham Section, Belmont Ave etc... My parents came over from the other side, Central Italy, around the turn of the 20th century. Many great times back then.
Regards DM

Colavolpe is a Calabrian name, and there were several people by that name in the Bronx. Do not know of the pasticerria. Here is a page you might like:
