SAMSUNG NOTE 8 NOT DOING WELL

According to a new report posted by a Korean news site today, Samsung Electronics is seeking to win back the Chinese smartphone market with the Galaxy Note 8. The company plans to regain the trust of consumers that was battered by the Galaxy Note 7 battery fires and overcome China's retaliation against South Korean companies over the deployment of the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile system. However, Chinese mass media is pouring negative articles about the Galaxy Note 8 every day. Consequently preorders for the new Note 8 pale in comparison to those for Apple's new iPhone 8.

Preorders of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 reached 8,310 and 5,292, respectively, at JD.COM and Alibaba's Tmall, the two largest online retail marketplaces in China, as of 2:40pm on September 19. Considering preorders through Samsung Electronics' official websites and stores, the figure is estimated at over 20,000.

Chinese media is eager in criticizing the Galaxy Note 8 by comparing Apple's iPhone 8 which began receiving preorders around the same time. A Chinese IT news outlet said, "The iPhone 8 received more than 4 million preorders but the Samsung Note 8 received only thousands of preorders."

Entirely aside from the merits of the individual new phones, Samsung torpedoed their own boat with how they handled the rash of fires with their last flagship phones - first pretending it didn’t work, then initially demanding that phone owners hold them harmless and sign an NDA to get a replacement phone, then having the ‘fixed’ phones go on fire and Samsung again initially demanding people sign a quitclaim and an NDA to get a replacement phone yet again. Talk about tone deaf.

The best part was that the first batteries were defective units from a Chinese manufacturer... fine, it happens. Then the replacement batteries were manufactured in house ***by Samsung*** and they turned out to be even worse.

No wonder nobody wants a Note 8.

IPad and Mac desktop sales have been up in China, according to one analyst (one with a good track record, a lot of financial and investing commentary nowadays is bloggers' crap), a strong hint that, with the economic slowdown in China receding in the rear view, that iPhone sales were going to exhibit pent-up demand. Guess the analyst was right. Thanks Swordmaker.

I think the Note 8 has been selling okay in the US — of course, not taking on new market share has been a problem. But, Apple and Samsung are, in order, the most profitable mobile phone lines (with most of the profits accruing to Apple).

It’s a phenomenon called “Winner take all.”

Samsung claimed that the Note 8 has sold better than the Note 7 (the previous best prior to it being discovered that the thing was an uncontrolled pocket space heater)... but they refused to release any actual US sales numbers. That’s a bit suspicious.

As ZDNet noted: “Samsung did not provide any figures on Note 8 sales, so maybe it only sold one more than the last Note. The Note base is more limited than the broader mass audience who purchase the iPhone or Galaxy S series, but it’s also usually the enterprise crowd or those looking to do everything with their smartphone.”

Samsung is merely the most profitable of Apple’s competitors — no mean feat — but it’s a little like figuring out who’s the tallest of the seven dwarves. ;^)

I owned a note 7. I loved that phone despite the battery issues. Just got my note 8. So far it’s excellent. My only compliant is the limited number of colors I could get it in, but a case fixes that.

Given Samsung’s recent track record, you might want to keep a fireproof envelope on you for the first few months of ownership...

One company is from a nation we are protecting from nuclear attack, the other is gifting the ACLU cash to attack you.

So is FR supposed to be all warm n glow because China basically funneled more cash into the left’s pockets this week?

They have, but not anything like what happened with the Note 7. That was a whole new level of incompetence and stupidity unprecedented in the wireless industry.
