Shopping small mom-and-pop and other local merchants will have a cost, both economic and convenience. We have to prepare ourselves to pay it.
Beware, mom and pop merchants stock big national brands. No need to stress the wallet.
Store brand potato chips over Frito-Lay. Store brand soft drinks over Pepsi or Coke. Store brand vapor rub over Vicks. Shop around for a local insurance company that can beat Nationwide, State Farm and Prudential. Attend your local little league or high school games and dump the NFL. Put your money into a locally owned bank rather than Wells Fargo or Chase. Buy printer paper from Office Max instead of Office Depot. There are hundreds of other clothing stores that have much cheaper prices than Macys, Neiman Marcus and Nordstoms. OTOH, there are slightly higher priced stores than Target but your money works better elsewhere than that cheaply made junk. There are other phone companies besides Verizon.
Granted, sometimes it’s hard to get away from the big names who have control of the market like Microsoft and Apple but you and your wallet can be happy with just a little research.
