It's supposed to be representative of Christ's rising from the grave? ascending from the dreary realms of death? Something like that...(I'll leave the idea of the Harrowing of Hell to that wiki link, and guys like the likable enough Joel J. Miller [who I think is Orthodox convert over at Patheos] with no further comment, or opinion of my own)
The sculpture was meant to be positive, and understood by some to be that. I'm willing to spot old Pope Bennie this one. Meaning: I can more than forgive the man for sitting there, and forgive others too who thought the artwork something special, in a good way.
It must have seemed like a good idea at the time?
