Some idiot—EJ Dionne, I think—said, “We on the left are the real patriots because we like America now, not as it was!” Well, they’re “back” to hating America because of who won the election. Mercurial patriotism is not patriotism at all.
You can’t only like your mom when she makes spaghetti.
You can’t only like your country when your guy wins the election.
We aren’t one trick ponies. Running a free republic is working with lots of different opinions and trying to keep everyone as free as possible. Perfection is never going to happen. But this false “problem,” that every black man is at risk of becoming a victim of police violence, is no reason to sabotage the patriotism of the entire land.
