If the shooter had checked in by Sept 28, then he had plenty of time to “cool off” rather than just “go off”

Premeditated, calculated . . . Plenty of time to change his mind ...withdraw

Yet another curious angle is that an Israeli source earlier this morning identified him as Stephen C. Pollock (same middle initial, but different middle name) who was known to Israeli secret services as an Islamic convert and was also known by a Muslim name (Samir al something or another). This particular Pollock was in his 40s and from Florida and had a criminal record, so he may have converted in jail. He seems to have spent time in the ME though.

The info is on one of the longer early threads here.

Possible mistaken ID by ISIS? Or possible ID falsification by ISIS?

"Possible mistaken ID by ISIS? Or possible ID falsification by ISIS?"

Could be the reason they are claiming the attack, a false identification by ISIS. That would make sense as their claims are usually true which is what makes this curious. However, if he was an ISIS convert, you would think we would have reports out on his facebook page or twitter account praising allah, perhaps when they got to his room, the ISIS flag or even a Koran. There are no reports of any of that. I'm really dubious at this point about the ISIS claim.

The whole thing is puzzling. Mostly the fact that this would have taken quite a bit of advance planning to set up, the guns and platforms in the room were certainly evidence of advance planning, Isis made its threat in May, the event itself was obviously targeted, the wife or girlfriend or roommate or whatever she was is a little mysterious, and the guy’s identity is pretty close to that of someone else who is a verified Islamic convert who seems to have been known to Israeli security services.

What else?

Oh - the “else”? He wanted to make his living as a professional gambler and his father was a bank robber. And he’d had 28 different addresses.

Now what else?

Not to be hyper-critical, but don’t buy into this “lone wolf” BS - in this or any other situation.

I don't. First of all a true lone wolf attack is rare. Normally there's an organization behind the person getting the weapons used and making them available to the so-called lone wolf.

That so-called lone wolf is really just the tip on that one spear with lots of support behind it. The spear by itself is no more useful than a knife but on the staff it can be propelled with momentum striking at a distance; far more than just a knife by itself.

In this case the guy had a fully automatic spear thrower which enabled the killing and wounding of hundreds. Something else a lone knife could not do unless the victims were bound and helpless as sheep.

So far indications do point to a rare lone wolf attack for reasons not yet known that I've heard. I do hope a motive is found for the sake of the families, friends, and nation in general.

Below is a chilling collection of maps showing killings by acts of deadly terrorism by terrorists for 20 years.

Startling maps show every terrorist attack worldwide for the last 20 years!

In the US, your risk of death due to terrorism is roughly 1 in 46,000.

Around the world, that rate can vary wildly. In an attempt to visualize those global risks, Carnegie Mellon researchers teamed up with Robert Muggah, a global security expert and director of the think tank Igarapé Institute.

Together, they created Earth TimeLapse, an interactive platform that relies on data from the Global Terrorism Database to create maps of how many terrorism-related deaths occur annually worldwide. The larger the red circle, the more deaths in a given attack.

Here’s what the last 20 years of that data looks like with a map of deadly terrorism for each year.
