Now THAT I haven’t heard. I’ll look it up. Appreciate the recommendation.

Love this song. Even the Blues Brothers covered it.

Marty Robbins, king of the cowboy singers IMO, did a good version.

I’ve got about ten versions on my phone. Love the Burl Ives cover. One that I NEVER expected was by Judy Collins! Exceptionally good and the only female cover I have.

Thanks. I’ll track that, too. When I was growing up in the 50’s/60’s, whose version would I have heard? It was definitely part of my childhood.

That is wild about Judy Collins! My musical world has obviously been WAY too small! I actually saw her sing in a coffee house in Chicago in the early/mid 60’s. Impressive.

I know I’m going to show my ignorance broadly, but I thought the Blues Brothers were just for the movie. Which I loved. Were they a real group, as well?

Blues Brothers ... Were they a real group?

They started as a fun skit on Saturday Night Live - an overblown, over stereotyped blues band featuring the two "brothers." They really worked hard on it, though and made some good music, had some good dance moves. And it looked like a lot of fun. So apparently they decided to make the movie after Dan Akeroyd and John Belushi were gone from SNL and perhaps had more time.

it was a pretty good show, as I recall.

John Belushi was such a loss. I loved him in the Sat Nite Live Star Trek skit. To me a classic. Also loved him in Continental Divide. Being from Chicago, he seemed to be portraying one of our newspaper people.

My favorite show was Bob Dylan. Total control of his audience. Worst favorite - Andre Segovia. Never seen such a bored performer who was counting the money in his head as he played.

JOHNNY CASH!!!!!

Burl Ives YES - THIS IS IT!!!!!! MY CHILDHOOD

Vaughn Monroe Putting me to sleep - but loved the black stallion

Marty Robbins Not much passion and the group is diminishing him; feels like musical showing off

Johnny Cash WONDERFUL!!!! Fantastic storytelling. And the group supports perfectly.

Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash Having trouble because I’m so awestruck by the two it’s hard to evaluate in a cool fashion; complicated; subtle; not overdone but passion in the voices; never heard that verse; WONDERFUL!!!!

Spiderbait - voices lost to the music; not well balanced; driving rhythm good; feels like it could have been great if better handled

The Outlaws - still love this version; got the driving rhythm but balances

Judy Collins (Paradise album - note to myself) - I would enjoy hearing this over and over again; love her

Add:

Anton Myburgh (great male bass)
Duane Eddy”(famous guitar, instrumental, big strings)
Kevin Lovatt (sound effects get in the way, but good singer)
Vic Damone
Richard Kiser
The Sons of the Pioneers (1960, remastered, “Riders in the Sky”, not the Sons of the Pioneers from the 30s - heavy on strings)
Patrick Norman (instrumental, good finger picking style)

It’s hard to pick a favorite.
