ROKU and XTV The demise of the channel
https://www.rokuguide.com/private-channels/xtv-2 ^ | N/A | STAFF

SORRY - XTV is no longer in operation.

The original XTV, known and loved by hordes of Roku users looking for free access to cable channels and popular network shows, was removed from Roku as a result of a third party claim of copyright violation. Mere days after removal, the channel was reborn as XTV-2. "All content," read a notice on the channel, "is now used with permission or is in the public domain."

But, alas, XTV's rebirth was short-lived. Apparently, not all content was used with permission or in the public domain. As of October 5, 2017, XTV fans launching the non-certified channel on their Roku devices were greeted with an FBI Anti-Piracy Warning and a notice that "Roku has removed this unauthorized service due to repeated claims of copyright infringement." See screenshots below.

R.I.P., XTV.

I found the channel last year and it was obvious that it was pirating 4/5 of its content or more. got rid of it immediately. this channel had more content then most paid services and was so brazen about the theft of services that I believe they were directly linking to paid services and giving the content away.

I am a huge cable cutter fan and have been doing this for at least 7 years but the cable companys will not give up their stranglehold on the public.

We all want ala carte service over 2000 bundled channels of pralines and dick for $200 a month

Keep up the pressure and when the contracts end we may get what we want

We will never surrender to tryanny

It’s a streaming media box. We dropped our cable almost 3 years ago and got a Roku3. Have never looked back. Got it at Walmart. It’s not for everyone - especially is you like your sports, but we’ve found plenty to watch. Lots of free channels and some pay, like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and Sling.

I have not used streaming in probably 7 months due to the constant battles with copyright from the cable companys.
All I use now is free OTA just like we used to do as kids

The problem is that just like then, its a canned audienece and you cant see what you want when you want it

ota is great for nfl games but now the nfl is not worth watching.

Iwould rather wach inspector Morse reruns on ITV3 for $5 a mo

APox on the cable companys!

We did the same after the MEEEE-Gyn Kelly interview with now President Donald Trump.

Cut cable, put everything on Roku.

Now it is too difficult to watch TV. Between Sling and other options, there is too much to choose from.

Standard cable TV should be dead in short order, the Roku-type streaming options are just too good not to roll over them.

My kids, now grown, are "on demand content only" viewers. I don't know how cable TV grows their market in the future with these new options. "What I want, when I want" is the new and future model.

Oh, and NO NFL on our system unless we use an antenna. :)

We love Sling! We also have Amazon and Hulu. Even with all three together plus the cost of internet, it is STILL half of what we paid when we had cable!

Can you use a TiVo while using sling or roku? I’m getting hosed on cable.

The upside is you are not funding CNN or MSNBC any longer.

I have ached to cut the cable and use something like Roku to watch TV. But as I understand it, you need a cable connection for Roku to run on. So what do you gain? You’re not really free from cable. Please advise.

I am not sure of all the features of TIVO but sling has a DVR option available at $5 a month.

Roku is excellent - we have Filmstruck which is the Criterion Collection (foreign and American classic film) and Britbox which features classic and modern British television programs. We also have Netflix & Hulu but don’t use it as much.

I’ve been using Roku for years instead of cable TV. It’s a menu of channels. Basically TV over the Internet. Some with a small monthly charge ilke Netflix but many of them free.

There’s more than enough legitimate content for anybody. I will never run out of things to watch. I don’t understand why some feel they have to pirate content. I have no interest in that. Tons of classic shows, movies and documentaries are available legitimately. If I live to be 100, I’ll still not have enough time to watch it all. And I have no cable TV, just a basic Internet hookup.

Does anyone watch the ‘Smithsonian channel?’ Love it!!
The Smithsonian Channel brings to you original programs, explores science, nature, history and pop culture among many things.

...like Roku to watch TV. But as I understand it, you need a cable connection for Roku to run on. So what do you gain? You’re not really free from cable. Please advise.

Roku just needs an internet connection. You may be getting that already from your Cable TV provider, but when people say they are cutting the cord, they mean they are opting out of the cable TV channel packages, and instead using internet-connected devices to stream the content they want.

Ultimately you would only be paying the cable company for the internet connection, and not the TV channels, rental on the cable box, dvr, etc..

If you are going to look into Roku, I highly recommend the Roku 3. It is a small box about the size of a deck of cards that connects to your TV, and can provide streaming with either a wireless or wired (Cat 6 cable) connection. If you can make the wired connection, it is awesome. But even with wifi, it does a damn good job. Good luck.
