IOW, on the date of this SCOTUS case, 1942: after the Japanese had overwhelmed most of Asia and the Germans most of Europe, and Rommel’s success in Africa was making the fight against the Axis powers look like WWII might be a close thing, it didn’t require a lot of political acumen or courage for the Court to rule, “No, we’re not going to require our children to give the Hitler Youth salute to our flag.”
