To: ping jockey
When I was in high school in the early 70s, I listened to a lot of Kiss (and Ted Nugent, Rush, Aerosmith, Pink Floyd, Yes, Styx, and REO Speedwagon.) I was in a band, and we played a number of Kiss songs.

My bandmates and myself all saw Kiss as the ultimate garage band. Simple songs that were fun (and easy) to play, and fun to listen to. Rock that didn't kill a party.

KISS Alive was THE seminal live album. While their studio albums were good, that live album was able to demonstrate their live performance, and it was awesome.

I never did get to see them live... I had tickets to their Destroyer tour, but a family emergency kept me from going to the concert.
