Watching how-to videos is not a bad thing to do if your father is physically, or, in this case, morally absent.

(Full disclosure: my Mom and Pop divorced when I was little, and he stayed involved in my life, but it still would have been better for me if he were around all the time, because I would certainly have learned more DIY skills. I supposed I could get more advice on that from him if he hadn't passed from lung cancer back in July.)
