Darn near every young kid seen in my neighborhood is a fat porker.
When we were kids we were running, playing, pedaling bicycles everywhere...and it has contributed to a fit adulthood.
These children are essentially welded to their smartphones.

The poorest here are now the most likely to be obese,
something that hasn’t happened in all of human history. I wonder if sustained uprisings or revolutions could even happen now when the poorest are so well fed with super cheap processed foods and so passively entertained.

If it is by BMI it can produce a lot of “false positives”.

BMI makes incorrect assumptions because it only looks at height and weight.

Obviously it will find out of shape people if they are heavy.

It misses out of shape people and sickly people whose height/weight numbers appear okay to the BMI scale.

It also incorrectly calls very muscular and athletic folks overweight/obese.

It is a very, very awful system. Not comprehensive and totally built on the false premise that a person who weighs less for their height always is healthier (has a lower bmi score) than a person with a higher bmi score.

I am an Electrical Engineer, not a chemistry major. But, I blame Corn Syrup. Why? When Coke was sweetened with cane sugar, it satisfies but you only can drink 1-2 bottles a day. Drink more and you WILL be sick

Eat too much ice cream made with real sugar, and you will puke. But you can eat gallons of ice cream sweetened with corn syrup and drink a case of Coke a day. In fact, you crave more of it, as you eat it. Unlike food made with cane sugar, which satisfies and “warns” you to stop.

You can trace the rise in weight gain and Diabetes to the US Govt’s dictate to use Corn Syrup in place of Cane Sugar without (or in spite of) safety research as to what it does do humans.

I believe it. Maybe only 1 or 2 out of 10 people I see in Walmart are not overweight.

Fear of going for walks or engaging in other healthy outdoor activities adds to the problem in many areas (increasingly more dangerous dog breeds on the loose along rural roads, fears of molesters, fears of being noticed by gossips, fears of socially and legally approved, armed drug addicts with high incomes and expensive lawyers, etc.).

I remember when the big came out, there is no allowance for muscle vs fat. According to the official bmi Michael Jordan, GW Bush, and most fit muscular athletes rated as obese.

I wonder how much obesity is the result of genetics and the aging population as the Baby Boomers reach their senior years?

I think the metabolic mechanism is the key to the obesity epidemic. I believe the various races have unique survival mechanism built into their physical systems which are passed down to each generation. Because of this, certain races have built into their metabolic system an efficient method to turn off the metabolism at a time of food shortage. The Irish who survived the potato famine, carried a survival mechanism to pass down to future generations. This behavior of the metabolic system preserves the body as a survival mechanism. When there is an abundance of food, excess calories are stored as fat. Certain races have very efficient metabolic systems for storing fat for times of starvation. Such survival mechanism have been passed down through the generations from a time when life existed in a feast and famine environment.

As one ages, the metabolic system has a survival mechanism for when they reach their older years. Because age causes one to loose their youthful energy to hunt, the metabolism slows down to conserve energy. An older person is more vulnerable to injury and a slower pace is a safety mechanism. Access to food is a slower process and all the more reason for a slower metabolism.

These metabolic survival mechanisms work against a person trying to loose weight by lowering their caloric input. When caloric input is lowered, the metabolic rate slows down and less calories are consumed. The lower caloric input may even store more fat.

Maybe a pill can be safely taken by these obese individuals to kick up their metabolic systems when they are trying to lose weight by lowering their caloric input.

America is today Fatty Nation

I’m 6’5” and 224-235

36 waist

Not Scott Glenn sinewy thin....I wish

But not fat

Only female groups not mostly obese are rich white women and some orientals.....Chinese and Thai......other orientals and Indians are as far as whites

Mexicans and black women are 75-80% over 20 pounds overweight and half are morbidly obese

Men are fast too but it looks like maybe a third less so

It’s symptomatic of our decline

No discipline and no self control

Go to a Wal Mart or Cracker Barrel or Six Flags and you’ll see

Only exceptions are high altitude places and rich zip codes

Man.....obesity in my youth was rare

This is a new thing....since 90s....coincides with body ink and other mutilations.....self loathing?

Diana Thomas, a fellow with The Obesity Society, pointed out that the rise in youth obesity also is likely to continue because obese adults tend to mate, reproduce more often, and produce children that also struggle with excess weight.

What? I think I need to see the documentation behind this claim. Fat people are having better sex than the general population? Show me the stats on that, please.

You can’t go by their ‘obesity’ numbers, lots of factors are left out. Medical/Medicine induced obesity, body builders, workers who do heavy lifting have larger muscle mass, large bones and muscle mass that is heredity.

According to their charts at 5’ and 128 I’m OBESE. Yet if I weighed the 110 they think I should, I’d have more health issues with no reserve weight to fight them. I can drop up to 10 lbs with a Gastropresis or Meniere’s attack in a few days of puking/diarrhea. Same goes for some drug reactions.

I eat twice a day, with a small snack.

I’m between 40-50 years old. 5’10”, 212 lbs. Have a bit of a gut, but blood veins pop out of my arms. Work an office job but burn wood so I get exercise.
I’m a bit overweight, but the BMI says I am obese. Pure crap. No skinny kid out there can keep up with me working.
