A 3-year-old girl died Saturday afternoon when she fell into a grease trap and drowned at an ice cream parlor in Auburn, police said.

The incident occurred at Bruster's Real Ice Cream on East University Drive, police said.

According to police, video evidence from the scene showed the girl was playing with two of her siblings when she apparently fell through a lid covering one of the grease pits on the property.

“The family was at a local ice cream store which had an outdoor a picnic table and nearby is a large sewer opening covered by a wooden top. The wooden top turned out to be rotten; Sadie fell thru; that’s why it took 45 min. to find her.”

The question then should be, why was the lid so cheaply constructed that someone could fall through it?

I'll take "lawsuit" for $200, Alex...

And for the pain and heartbreak of losing a toddler...the jury will be on the parents' side. My dad was a Chicago defense attorney, and a very good one.

He would not have wanted to take this one on.

I so agree with you, but I had no trouble this time as it is from AL.COM and of course the War Eagle and Crimson Tide hints. Full disclosure, I was born in Gadsden Alabama.

This is hard to hear about. A grease trap lid that can open and shut without anyone knowing...

Jesus heals in all ways, brings peace that passes all understanding. Praying for your sister and her family too.

Thank you. He is infinite love and understanding. A divine soul whose Father asked him to experience human life. What an incredible gift.

All the best, FRiend. Gotta get to bed now, hope to see around. :) Julie

Maybe it was a very old grease trap and the rim ring that supports the lid and keeps it from falling in had corroded in places... so that when she stepped on it, the lid tipped inward with nothing to stop it, and she slid through.

If no one had used that grease trap in years maybe no one ever had a reason to lift the lid and so, the corrosion beneath was never seen.

“The grease trap is a six-foot deep, in-ground container.

Sadie was playing in the area, which has picnic tables and a grassy area where children play, an official said.

It wasn’t the first time the Andrews family had visited the ice cream shop for the children to play and have treats.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said Sadie stepped onto the lid of the grease trap, which apparently wasn’t locked or secured, and fell in when the door opened.

The door closed on top of her, he said.”

Almost like one of those scenes from a horror movie. Very sad.
