I use the word “courtesans” advisedly. The numerous young women whom Harvey Weinstein allegedly bedded are generally painted as unfortunate and unwilling victims of a sexual predator, but this is hardly the case. These women were over the age of consent. They were not mentally incapacitated. The man they decided to sleep with was not their a professor in their college course, nor a priest in their parish church, nor a judge before whom they appeared in court. They were free agents, and he was a man who was in a position to provide something that they earnestly desired.
Mr. Weinstein was a powerful gatekeeper, and was willing to open that gate to certain comely young women who wanted in. But there was an entrance fee. He made it clear to them what the price was, and they decided they were willing to pay it. No rape or coercion was involved; it was a commercial transaction.

Lots of women do that. Most just can’t leverage their assets to get rich and famous, and have to settle instead for a roof over their heads or someone to pay their credit card bills.
Where Weinstein’s behavior might be in trouble is if, somewhere in this cadre of women claiming boorish behavior, there were underage girls or physical force.
Most of these women waited far, far too long to have a court case and the facts are that most got the parts and even further roles and appeared on his arm in public!
It was simply a transaction: he had something they wanted and told them in no uncertain terms, what the price of admission was!
They took him up in the deal and the rest is history.
Read the whole article. Rape was probably though not certainly involved in at least some instances and the author does not address that but otherwise the article is right on. Given the constant buzz about Hollywood that goes back three quarters of a century, only the most unaware and naive of girls would have approached any producer without knowing what was more than merely possible.
Teenage actresses don’t generally attend such “business” meetings without adult representatives to approve contract negotiations.
Driving them to the "meeting" and waiting breathlessly on pins and needles to hear if it paid out? This is California, land of pushy stage moms with a vested monetary interest, keep that in mind.
The depravity goes deeper than most on FR are willing or perhaps capable of envisioning, I do know that.

Interesting that the columnist entitles his column Gates of Vienna. There is well published erotic novel entitled Josephine Mutzenbacher etc. about a turn of the century Viennese courtesan. It is now attributed to the author of Bambi. Josephine was not a victim, but used her looks and, ahem, skills to rise to the top of Viennese society.
