This has already started with the current version of Firefox (56+). All my current add-ons are label legacy including AdBlock plus, Noscript, Classic Theme Restorer, and about a half-dozen more. Below are some links to help Firefox users understand the explosive demolition of their browser come Black Tuesday November 14:

Dayglored,
This is not related directly to Windows, but you might want to ping your list anyway given its importance.

Well there’s Brave to go to. FF just may have shot itself in the foot.

Mozilla is apparently now supporting antifa financially according to an article here on FR.

Embrace, then extinguish.

I turn them off anyway.

Firefox is my middle child browser. I use Explorer for business (kinda gotta), Chrome for fun and FF when I need an alternate to either.

Of course I never use Edge no matter how hard Win tries to make me. Edge is the worst browser ever. I will use Opera or Dolphin first.

I’ve noticed Firefox lagging alot lately. Switched over to Chrome for some sites.

Firefox seems determined to commit suicide. They appear to have fully sold out.

Between wanting to update every few days, and killing off the add ons that make it superior to the spyware browsers.

I’m blocking updates at this point and will stick with it as long as I can. Meanwhile, I’m learning to make do with Brave.

I’m not getting by without mouse gestures, so they can keep this update.

Now I have to find another browser, crap!

FF has been steadily implementing this over the last couple of weeks.

First, the add-ons were identified as Legacy and wouldn't work; however, a work-around solution (restart in Safe Mode, exit, restart normally) restored them to working. Then, the work-around wouldn't work anymore. A couple of days after that, the Legacy add-ons weren't even listed anymore -- and any attempt to reinstall them was met with a message that the add-on was incompatible and would not be installed.

Well just darn. One of the addons I use is FireFTP. Just checked out its status (I’d never heard of Waterfox):

FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP/SFTP client for Waterfox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP/SFTP servers.

Check out my new project, FireSSH!After 13 years and 25 million downloads later, Firefox has officially removed FireFTP and FireSSH support from the browser. Thus, I’ve ended support / development of the addons. I recommend switching to Waterfox to continue using the addons.

Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SFTP, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

I don’t know what the numbers are but I think there is some difference between the inventory of legacy addons for Firefox and how many of them have a wide and active current following. I currently use only a fraction of the addons I have had over the years, but I know many I no longer use are still out there.

We really can’t complain. Mozilla is not a profit making company but a non-profit “open-source-software” foundation publishing browsers and other software products (like Thunderbird for Email).

Knowing I contribute nothing to their work myself, though I use their products, I do not complain about something I neither contribute to nor pay for.

There’s also palemoon palemoon.org which is a fork of Firefox from about 2 years ago. It’s still being maintained and still supports many of the old plugins like no script and a version of Adblock (but not all as it’s undergone some revisions which break some functionality or didn’t go along with other Firefox api changes that the plugins used) but there ar meant workarounds for existing plugins.

I’m using the latest version of Waterfox which is based on Mpzilla’s Firefox but is a fork for 64 bit OS. Reading this is the first I’ve heard about add-ons being labeled Legacy, I just checked and none of mine are. I received a message from Waterfox about converting .mht and .maff files to a new archive format by sometime in November because they will no longer be supported, other than that I’ve heard nothing about add-ons going away.

If Waterfox is going to have the same issues then are there any other browsers that will be able to use existing Fire-WaterFox add-ons ?

Based on what I've read in this thread, I just installed Waterfox. Not only does it run my critical add-on (NoScript), but it launches and runs much more quickly than FF and is using only about 50% of the system resources than FF did!

Just did a little digging and found out that Waterfox will still continue to support it’s legacy add-ons, which, at this point in time are the same as those running on Firerfox.

“Firefox’s large collection of legacy add-ons has always been one of Firefox’s strongest points and one of the primary reasons the browser has been popular so many years.”

The large collection of addons is Firefox’s ONLY strong point and the ONLY reason I use Firefox and promote it to my clients!

Mozilla is determined to relegate Firefox to the trash heap of history.

First, Firefox users should verify that automatic installation of updates is disabled. I had it disabled on one of my PC's and it mysteriously became enabled. Check now and do not trust them. Second, I am on version of 56.0. When the update was installed, I noticed that a number of sites, including Freerepublic, do not get their tab reload "arrow" handled correctly. Instead of turning back to an "arrow" it stays as an "X". I have to either use the menu on the tab or -R to reload the page. I suspect that this behavior is caused by the coming brave new world. I am a Tab Mix Plus user which is a Legacy add-on which has not yet provided a new version.

The "legacy" add-ons are the only reason I use Firefox. Without them, Firefox becomes a "legacy" browser.
