Get ready for horror to once again top the North American box office, while George Clooney's star-studded, dark satire Suburbicon may find little pre-Halloween love from audiences.

Lionsgate's fright-fest Jigsaw — reviving the marquee Saw franchise — is the clear favorite to win the weekend with a debut of $20 million or more from 2,800 theaters, including Imax locations. Horror has been the big headline of the 2017 box office so far, led by New Line's blockbuster It.

Money quote:

Suburbicon, despite high-profile stops at the Venice and Toronto film festivals, is tracking to open in the $5 million-$7 million range from 2,045 theaters. If so, that would mark the worst wide opening of Clooney's directing career, as well as one of the weakest starts for leading man Matt Damon, who stars opposite Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac.

HA HA!!! Just what we need another Hollywood bash fest of the 50s and suburbia. What new is there is say that was not covered by crap movies such as "Pleasantville".

The Tomatometer on this dog is 30% - a Rotten Tomato. (Ripe Tomato is 60% and up)

Also, so very tired of Hollywood's vendetta against suburbia and the people who live there. I was raised in a suburb, my hubby was raised in various suburbs. Both of us have lived in suburban settings all of our lives. I have never met the kind of people that Hollywood portrays as living in suburbia. sigh

High profile stops at film festivals where everybody hated it. The general consensus is there’s a reason the Cohen’s never made it. Meanwhile Saw is a license to print money, not much money, but that’s what controlling the budget is for.

Horror movies are made on the cheap. No big bucks FX and one can hire no name actors. I think I read a study that horror movies have the best rate of return of any genre.

Horror is the home to some of the most business savvy and responsible producers and directors in the business. Everybody’s got a good handle on what their potential revenue is, how much that means their budget should be, and then bringing it in under budget. ROI is high because nobody’s eyes get bigger than they should be.

Horror movies have always been so. It’s how Universal got started - the Dracula and Frankenstein franchises made a lot of money.

Another great example - the original Halloween. John Carpenter made it for about $1M and it made over $100M and spawned how many sequels.

At least 1 more. And of course that iconic score happened because of the budget, they couldn’t afford to hire somebody, Carpenter could play piano OK and walla.
