British newspaper got mystery call 25 minutes before JFK was shot, newly released files say

A British newspaper received an anonymous phone call about "big news" in the United States minutes before President John F. Kennedy was shot, newly released files on the assassination say.

A batch of 2,800 declassified documents includes a memo from the CIA to the director of the FBI, dated Nov. 26, 1963, about a call received by the Cambridge News on Nov. 22, the day Kennedy was killed in Dallas.

The memo from deputy CIA Director James Angleton says the caller said that "the Cambridge News reporter should call the American Embassy in London for some big news, and then hung up."

The memo says Britain's MI5 intelligence service calculated that the call came 25 minutes before Kennedy was shot.

It said the reporter who took the call "is known to them as a sound and loyal person with no security record."

The memo was released by the U.S. National Archives in July but went unreported. It is also among a batch of files declassified by the U.S. government on Thursday.

Anna Savva, a current Cambridge News reporter, said Friday that the paper has no record of the incident.

"We have nothing in our archive — we have nobody here who knows the name of the person who took the call," she said.

It's unclear whether the call was merely a prank and the timing coincidental. The CIA memo says that several people in Britain had received similar anonymous phone calls "of a strangely coincidental nature" over the preceding year, "particularly in connection with the case of Dr. Ward."

Things like this happen. The police get whack job phone calls on a regular basis. It’s like those adds you see all the time predicting market calamities. After 20 years, they finally get it right by accident.

Many people thought Dallas was a bad idea for Kennedy. Speculation was elevated.

Could be an error in noting the time of the call, especially in retrospect.

“Big News” is rather vague. If somebody actually had inside knowledge of a plot and wanted the press to know about it, wouldn’t they say something a little clearer. My guess is it was just a coincidence or a kook who called with “big news” every day and just got lucky...

JFK was a really lousy President and a dreadful man. There were plenty of people who would have wanted him dead, including the FBI, the CIA, LBJ, and the Mafia. I don’t know about the Soviet Union—they could hardly have found a stupider president to fight against than JFK, who was too busy chasing women and massaging his back to fight a war properly.

Oh boy! Here come the conspiracy people. Can’t wait to see how this is parsed and spun. I so used to enjoy giving crap&facts to the Twin Tower conspiracy types - “You can see the many explosions going off on different floors”. There stupid ideas were just as idiotic as Rosie O’fatb*tch claim that fire can’t melt steel. And here I thought that swords were hammered in to shape with a cold stone mallet. What little I knew...haha.

You don’t think that the FBI and CIA have some explaining to do? That’s before the event and their behavior then and now.

What time would it have been where the call was received? The night shift, maybe they celebrate Thanksgiving too. Wasn’t it just before a holiday and someone late at night could have had one too many glasses of gin.

I'm sure that cops or newspapers occasionally get calls from some schizophrenic predicting an earthquake and,*voila!* an hour later there's a quake.

London is 6 hours ahead of Dallas and they don't have Thanksgiving in Britain.

Most likely. Any number of factors could have resulted in an incorrect time mark. Something as simple as a clock showing the wrong time to someone writing down a recollection of the time and getting it wrong. Could also be a tabloid looking for drama.

I beg to differ. First there was no "war", only advisors if you're referring to Viet Nam. Johnson was the president who increasingly put our troops there and ultimately lost it do to his and Defense Secretary McNamara's micro-management, not to mention Conkrite and the hippies.

JFK was probably the last conservative principled Democrat in the Oval Office. In case you have read the wrong books or just have your facts wrong, JFK faced down the Soviets while they were installing possible nuclear tipped missiles in Cuba just off our coast. That is an indisputable historical fact.

Yes, the Bay of Pigs was a bad call (like Carter's disaster rescue mission in Iran), but JFK got those missiles out of Cuba!

I was a child while this was happening and had to practice drills under my desk. Since becoming an adult, I have learned to admire the man for his strength, wisdom, and resolve while the Soviets were building missiles just off Florida. He drew a red line in the sea against the Soviet ships bringing in more missiles. He stood by that red line rather than move it as we see so often nowadays. He won the day. He stopped the further transport of missiles and the Soviets dismantled their missiles in Cuba.

I believe JFK was a strong, principled, thoughtful, determined leader in the vein of President Reagan. President Trump is getting close. We'll see how he works out. You've got it wrong about President Kennedy. He may have played with Marilyn Monroe (never proven), but he backed down the Soviet mechanism lead by Khrushchev, the the most tyrannical Soviet leader since Stalin who wanted to nuke us all - he said so as pounding on his desk with his shoe. He was a crazy f*ck, but JFK put him in his place.

That took wisdom, patience, playing chess rather than checkers, and absolute support for our country. He and and his brother, along with his staff averted a nuclear holocaust. I will be forever thankful for JFK being in the Oval Office and that crucial moment in history, or else I would probably not be discussing this with you. Sorry you don't understand that JFK and advisors averted end world.

As for why and who assassinated JFK and Bobby, I don't think we will ever find out. However, I don't believe it was the CIA. What would be their motive and risk of exposure? My best guess would be Soviet operatives because JFK and Bobby were fearless in their opposition regarding the Soviet threat and may have been a payback for kicking them out of Cuba. The Soviets knew that Bobby was next in line and wanted some p*ssy like Johnson they could manipulate.

Well, he got the missiles out of Cuba by making a deal with the Soviets not to defend our ally, Poland. He pulled out the anti-IBM defensive missiles.

As for Vietnam, If you read the Pentagon Papers thoroughly, as published in a special section of the NY Times but never publicized by the MSM, you will find that JFK instructed the CIA to assassinate the President of South Vietnam, who was to JFK’s embarrassment a Catholic, and had been protested by a Buddhist Monk who killed himself and gained the press’s sympathy.

Before that, the South Vietnamese fought the war themselves. After that, we were obliged to send in lots more troops and do the fighting for themselves. When it was passed on to LBJ a while later, he had few choices. Either quit the war and let the Communists take over, or send in lots more troops.

Same with just about everything else. That “Camelot” business was a load of lies. I knew people in JFK’s cabinet, and had a lot of information that the MSM naturally covered up—such as Kennedy’s crippled back and his womanizing. He went to bed with at least three different women a day, which didn’t give him a lot of time to run things.

“...they don’t have Thanksgiving in Britain.”

It may not be a legal holiday in the UK but I have a very close female friend who has family over there and they celebrate the holiday every year. It’s actually very popular over there.

So you consider 7:30 pm to be "late at night", and you think an American holiday was widely celebrated around the world 6 days earlier? Or were they still on a bender from Canada's October 14 Thanksgiving that year?

You are mis-recollecting a bit there. In the 1960s Poland was firmly behind the iron curtain. (Ever wonder where the Warsaw of the Warsaw Pact was located?) It was Turkey that he had to pull the obsolete warheads out of. And IBM is a computer company based in America.

You are right, however, about the murder of the South Vietnamese president.

Yes, I’m afraid my memory isn’t as good as it was.

I’ll add another nugget. I was a Spec5 in the army back then, enlisted and in for three years, and good old JFK extended my term of service (and everyone else’s) by several months because of the Berlin Crisis. Which is to say, he didn’t know what the hell to do, so he thought he’d prove to Kruschev what a threat he was by postponing exits from the military.

I was due to complete my graduate work at Harvard in the spring semester, but had to postpone it until next fall. And my newly married wife and I were stuck in El Paso (near the missile range where I was a Hawk Missile Radar Repairman) for another six months or so.
