2 Navy SEALs under suspicion in strangling of Green Beret in Mali
O C Register ^ | 10/29/2017 | New York Times

No one has been charged in Sergeant Melgar’s death, which a military medical examiner ruled to be “a homicide by asphyxiation,” or strangulation, said three military officials briefed on the autopsy results. The two Navy SEALs, who have not been identified, were flown out of Mali shortly after the episode and were placed on administrative leave.

The biggest unanswered question is why Sergeant Melgar was killed. “N.C.I.S. does not discuss the details of ongoing investigations,” Ed Buice, the agency’s spokesman, said in an email, confirming that his service had taken over the case on Sept. 25.

Neither the Army nor the military’s Africa Command issued a statement about Sergeant Melgar’s death, not even after investigators changed their description of the two SEALs from “witnesses” to “persons of interest,” meaning the authorities were trying to determine what the commandos knew about the death and if they were involved. The uncertainty has left soldiers in the tight-knit Green Beret community to speculate wildly about any number of possible motives, from whether it was a personal dispute among housemates gone horribly wrong to whether Sergeant Melgar had stumbled upon some illicit activity the SEALs were involved in, and they silenced him, according to interviews with troops and their families. Other officials briefed on the inquiry said they had heard no suggestion that the Navy commandos had been doing anything illegal.

Too many possible random factors for any speculation to be worthwhile.

What is administrative leave in the Navy? As far as I remember their not going to send anyone home with pay and not get any work out of them.

I just don’t recall anyone in the Navy being put on administrative leave. Admin separation, yes.

Belay my last, I guess administrative leave is a thing now.

Top search results showed it is available for members of the military wanting to have same sex marriages.

Jesus! what did Obama do to our country?

Another New York Times anti-military smear piece, eh?

Where is their great investigative reporting on the death of Seth Rich? Huh?

The banner line of the NYT should be “Shit floats and so do we”

What is administrative leave in the Navy?

In the Air Force, we had an Airman that robbed a convenience store and was pulled from duty due to unreliability. We held TS clearance and his was withdrawn. He had to pull daily duty in the barracks area while his local legal case continued. After a few months of redlined orders, he eventually couldn't take the stress and hanged himself. My supervisor was the lead NCO in the barracks and found the guy hanging. He called in to our shop to be patched through to the Duty Officer. Really morbid humor continued on shift the rest of the night.

Our TSgt was prior Army from real combat in Korea with a Purple Heart. He told the Duty Officer that there was a suspected fatality in the barracks. A shaky voice but as formal and by the book as ever could be.

Not only admin leave but paternity leave these days. I would imagine that they would have come up with a way to keep them separate from their peers anyway in a situation where they are suspected of killing another special force warrior...will be interesting to see how this pans out - did they deem the Green Beret to be "dishonorable" or are they dishonorable pukes trying to protect something bad...

Time will tell - or maybe not......

We know so little about this.

One man is dead, a couple of others are accused.

That is about all we know.

I have seen several senior NCO’s who were relieved of their duties for whatever reason and then designated “Special Assistant to the Commander.” Basically, hung around the orderly room trying not to look incompetent. Perhaps this is similar.

It’s a new era, and the teams have changed, not all for the better.

Spent a year in continuing education that had a number of vets from various branches of the services going under the GI bill. Most were pretty laid-back. However one vet in particular (a little guy) was extremely (and obnoxiously) vocal about how his branch of the military was the best, and how he'd fight anyone about it.

The instructor was an ex-Korean vet as well, and finally fronted him about his running his mouth off. He graphically told him what he would do to him if he ever acted on his verbal threats (and I had no reason to doubt that the instructor was more than capable to follow through).

Nothing further came of it, but ran into Pvt. Mouthy a few times afterwards and it seemed he never quite learned his lesson. That was over 40 years ago, so wonder if he wised up or learned people skills the hard way...

Seems adult supervision has become lacking. My respect for them many years ago was that they were the more intelligence operators, far superior to most other. Today, they’re just juvenile clowns. The type that think “that’s what she said” is funny.

Time will tell someone, but what it tells probably won't get to us.

Why not something as simple as a couple of guys getting drunk and having a fight that got out of hand?

Getting drunk and out of hand? So much for special operators. More like special Olympics.

I wonder how well Special Forces were infiltrated during the Fraud’s reign.

Highly. Once one gets in it is all they hire. Corporate America is having the same problem. They are loaded with liberals who only hire liberals.

I’ve been stunned by the cowardly little liberal types coming out of the Special Forces. Just sniveling little liberals.
