Yet Trump and his wife were granted a rare dinner at the Forbidden City, an honor that has not been bestowed on a foreign leader since the founding of the People’s Republic of China 68 years ago. Now why would they do that if they perceived him as a weak leader who is incapable of working towards closing the trade gap as he promised in his campaigning?

Apparently your weak analysis may be a tad premature.

It may in the Chinese government’s mind be more about reminding Trump of China’s longevity and existence as a nation and people compared to our mere 241 years of existence. So have it there instead of Beijing.
