Now why would they do that if they perceived him as a weak leader who is incapable of working towards closing the trade gap as he promised in his campaigning?

It may in the Chinese government’s mind be more about reminding Trump of China’s longevity and existence as a nation and people compared to our mere 241 years of existence. So have it there instead of Beijing.
