Children of any age can hunt in Wisconsin, after Gov. Scott Walker signed a bill that eliminates the states minimum age.
Walker quietly signed the Republican bill Saturday, exactly a week before the states nine-day gun deer hunting was set to open. The law took effect Monday. Kids will have to wait five days before they can start shooting deer, but they can participate in several seasons already underway, including bow deer, pheasant, ruffed grouse, rabbit and squirrel.
A Wisconsin resident must be at least 12 years old to purchase a hunting license or hunt with a gun. However, until now children as young as 10 could participate in a mentored hunt. That program allows the child to hunt with a mentor who is at least 18 and has gone through a hunter safety course or had military training if theyre younger than 44. The mentor and student could have only one gun between them, and they had to stay within arms reach of one another. The new law allows children of any age to participate in a mentored hunt and allows mentor and student to each carry a weapon. [ ]
George Meyer, executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, said he doubted many children under 10 will take up arms and head out in search of a deer. Its new, right before the season, Meyer said. People already have their hunting plans scheduled. But there will be some people, those who followed the bill.
The federation opposed the bill because of the provision allowing student and mentor to each carry a weapon. Meyer said a mentor engaged in hunting wont pay as much attention to the student.

Walker just wants to arm toddlers!
And give them all AK15’s with magazines that can fire thousands of rounds a second.
With a chainsaw attachment and laser pointers on it’s friggin forestock
This is great for families that want to stock the freezer. Now even the baby can tag a deer.
Minimum ‘hunting’ age.
Wait till that is spun to be an ‘out’ for Moore.
On opening day of gun deer season in Wisconsin there are more armed people than there were in Saudi for Desert Storm. Schools and businesses close.
Group hunting within the mentor program is not allowed. The mentor can not legally shoot a deer for the person he is mentoring.
Hey there goes one (Bang!) Hey you shot my cow!
It’s the second week of deer camp...
LOL Wow you actually thought things like a leftard. Thats exactly how they will think. Ouch. My brain hurts after shutting it down. How can these imbeciles vote?
May God bless my home state of Wisconsin and gov
He had a silencer on his pen!
Sure he can’t. Wink wink.
The gun grabbers will implode.
My husband remembers the schools being closed in his PA hometown, the Monday after Thanksgiving :-)
When he was very young and the family of modest means, they really counted on the deer they were allowed to take.
“Walker just wants to arm toddlers!”
Yo-Yo? I kid you not - That is EXACTLY what two Libs I know said. word. for. word.
So predictable! *SMIRK*
Sneaky Governor Walker was so QUIET about this that I didn’t even hear him - and I keep my ear to the ground up here in ‘Sconny! ;)
Schools actually close in Antlers, OK....the first day of deer gun season.
I'd like to say I have cunning insight into the liberal mind, but all I did was echo what was being said when Iowa last year repealed it's ban on those under 18 from even touching a handgun under the supervision of their parents. (The only state in the Union that had such a ban.)
Just so long as there was no chainsaw bayonet.
Nice but not terribly useful. Shortage of required class spaces to get a license in Wisconsin makes age a moot point.
