The Russian Ground Forces have taken delivery of the first batch of modernized 2C4 Tulip self-propelled 240-millimeter mortars. The 1960s-era weapons were upgraded with new datalinks, communications gear and fire control systems. Russia eventually hopes to modernize all 500 of the vehicles it has in storage.

“In the course of deep modernization, modern control and communication facilities are installed in the combat vehicles,” reads a Russian Ministry of Defense statement.

The manner in which the weapon is deployed is fascinating.

I can’t describe it except to say the entire weapon is transferred from the vehicle to the ground.

the photos explain it better.

“The Russian Army has an unlimited supply of Poor Bastids...”

From ‘Enemy at the Gates’:
Officer #1: [repeating through megaphone] The one with the rifle shoots!
Officer #2: [handing out rifles] One out of two gets rifle.
Officer #1: The one without, follows him! When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one who is following picks up the rifle and shoots!

realistically this is a heavy mortar for destroying fixed positions

Thus rendering the Maginot Line obsolete, once again.

Russia has 1 year mandatory service for all males, with scads of exceptions. Maybe not unlimited, but plenty of poor bastards who couldn’t get into a university or hit one of the other exemptions. Per the usual, the elites have a choice, not the little people.

I was expecting a towed weapon that can be infiltrated (a la Ukraine-type ops. This will draw serious counter-battery fire.

That’s true that everyone serves, but conscripts aren’t sent to war. They get basic training, work for a year (mostly in logistical type work), then go home. It’s sort of a rite of passage in Russia. Just about everyone sent to an active war zone these days are volunteers. Also, in years past, the wealthy could buy a fake or official but corrupt “army ticket”, (which is essentially your proof of service and discharge, without which you pretty much can’t get a job), but after they busted a giant operation that was doing these “left” papers, it’s pretty tough to get around it. Even people that do advanced degrees often have to go after they graduate.

It had better be self-propelled as mortar rounds will get almost instantaneous counter battery fire if their oponent has tracking radars running.
