Support is coming in from around the world for a student who was paralyzed in a car accident on his way to Godwin High School in Virginia.
Ryan Estrada, 16, says he lost control of his vehicle while trying to avoid a bicyclist on Gayton Road in Henrico County on Nov. 8, according to WTVR.
I remember swerving past the biker and there was another car coming in the lane so I had to swerve back into my lane, recalls Estrada. I remember losing control of the wheel, hitting the mailbox and then hitting the tree.
Estrada said two motorists, who he now considers his angels, came to his rescue and called 911.
Vehicle in the ditch with someone hanging out of the vehicle not moving. Complainant thought they were deceased, can be heard from emergency communications from that morning.
When I was hanging out the window, I knew something was wrong because I couldnt feel anything in my shoulders and I just couldnt feel anything, said Estrada.
Ryan suffered a broken vertebrae in his neck and severe spinal cord injury resulting in paralysis of his hands and legs.
It was easily the worst day of my life to see him in the emergency room so helpless and crying, Caroline Estrada, Ryans mother, said.
I was about to go into surgery and the whole day I was sad, crying, bummed, said Ryan. I remember my uncle, I saw him in like heaven, and he told me that Im going to get through the surgery and everything is going to be alright, so I knew from that moment, I was smiling. I looked over at my mom and told her everything was going to be OK -- You know Uncle Jack, hes got me.
Ryan said he also saw his Grandfather whom he had never met and had only seen in family photos.
I think it means heaven is real and Gods real and that Im here for a reason. I didnt die for a reason, he said. I think it happened to regain my faith. I wasnt really a religious person the last year going through depression. But ever since the accident, every day praying.
Ryan spent seven days in the trauma center at the VCU Medical Center and has since been moved to the Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center at VCU. He is in intense physical and occupational therapy.
The family has been overwhelmed by support from as far away as Ireland from a GoFundMe account that friends set up.
As Caroline prepares to bring Ryan home, doctors and therapists have informed her of all the equipment necessary including a motorized wheelchair, a wheelchair-accessible van, a chair lift for the stairs, a Hoyer lift for all transfers just to start. The rehab therapists have been using the Tobi Dynavox with Ryan in the hospital and highly recommend he purchase one for home. This technology allows Ryan to use his eyes to operate a computer since he does not have use of his hands. They will also need to make renovations to their home to accommodate Ryan's new life, the GoFundMe stated.
Ryan's smiles as his mother shows him a wrestling video on her phone. Ryan's smiles as his mother shows him a wrestling video on her phone. The gratitude and indebtedness I feel for people and just the love its so overwhelming, but its the thing that Ryan talks about and I feel it everyday, said Caroline.
Ryans swim season at Godwin High School started the day of his accident. His hospital room is filled with cards and well wishes from his team and the community.
When asked how long he had been swimming for, Ryan said, "Since I could walk, cant walk anymore though but thats going to change. Im going to swim next year and go to states, watch me."
Ryans doctors are telling him to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. But Ryan feels his positivity will get him through and predicts he will walk again within six months.
I just throw a smile on my face, theres no point in being negative," said Ryan. "That doesnt do anything for you, but when you're positive and have a good mindset, only good things will come.
As desolate as it may seem, hes actually the happiest Ryan I have seen in a couple of years, said Caroline. I did worry more before [the accident] than now everything has come to a head and hes on the upswing.
Caroline and Ryan Estrada. Caroline and Ryan Estrada. Ryan told his mother everything happens for a reason.
We dont know that reason yet, but it happened for a reason and after seeing pictures of his car there is a reason Ryan is here, he is going to make good on his promise to touch lives in some way but hasnt figured that out yet, said Caroline.
Ryan will celebrate his 17th birthday Sunday. He could be released from the hospital as early as Dec. 27. He hopes to get back to school by February.
I honestly dont know why I am here, but I cant wait to find out, said Ryan.

Some neurosurgeon wrote a book on the subject recently.
God bless him. Hope to hear about him swimming within the next year.
Finding out the hard way.
Eben Alexander wrote PROOF OF HEAVEN. His father was also a neurosurgeon and was a friend of my father.
Wonderful bittersweet story.
But damn these damn bikers on car roads.
"...bikers on car roads..."
Umm, that isn't exactly forensic-level evidence. I can "think" that Martians are beaming me secret messages.
How about providing us with some hard proof that the lab boys can examine under an electron microscope.

I am reading a book now about NDE’s. That stands for Near Death Experiences. The title is IMAGINE HEAVEN and the author is John Burke. There are over a hundred stories told by the patients in their own words.

I have no doubt that all of us are here on a journey and that our final destination will depend upon whether we sought a life of good or a life of evil during our time. Those who choose good can be identified mostly through how they treat others.
In the 1990s, I read this one about children and NDEs:
And when I used to watch cable, I enjoyed this show...I Survived: Beyond and Back:

I believe in heaven but very skeptical about this story. Your uncle doesn’t have you. Jesus Christ would. Have to say the whole thing seems phony.
Did the cyclist stop and render aid?
A good friend of mine had such an experience a few years back, after a seizure led to him wiping out one side of his truck.
He’s not religious but his description of the event is similar to those we hear generally. He’s at peace and not afraid to die because he knows there’s a better place waiting.
Thanks for sharing. Yes it is real.
I don’t want to die, But I would very much like to see my mother and grandmother.
There’s a grandfather too, that I never met, but I’m pretty sure he is not in heaven.
Good point, but ruins the folksy Hallmark sentiments of so many NDE’s. “Now Im not afraid to die.” If you have not believed in God’s Son and his finished work on your behalf, you should be.
Even when the NDE speaks of Jesus, it often goes beyond what is written. People lap up anything OTHER than Scripture, while paying lip service to God’s Word. Should be reversed, ASAP.
