“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” has become quite the controversial entry for certain fractions of “Star Wars” fandom, so much so that an online petition is currently circulating asking Disney and Lucasfilm to remove “The Last Jedi” from official canon. The petition, started by Henry Walsh of Georgia, has well over 13,000 signatures and counting.

I won't post the whole article here, as the rest contains spoilers regarding the movie. It does seem that people are really divided on this one.

Also, The Last Jedi had a major Sunday to Monday box office drop, compared to the last two movies.

Force Awakens: -33.8% Rogue One: -53.3% Last Jedi: -57.5%

Looks like it will finish nowhere near the $936 million domestic gross of Force Awakens. Probably close to $600 million.

It’s played itself out, like American Idol and Dancing with the Stars.

Wish I could see it.. but since ticket sales are so bad the local theater closed a few weeks ago.

The closest to me now is 1.5 hours each way. With these 54inch 4k TVs I think they’ll have to stream right from the get-go.

What’s with this official “canon” business? Isn’t canon a religious term, pertaining to religious laws or doctrines? Is star wars somehow considered in that way by the true blue fans of these movies? Does this new movie somehow deviate so much from the other storylines as to be said to not belong?

I have seen the new movie so can’t comment. But this seems like a strong negative reaction by some of the most devoted Star Wars fans.

People hated Empire when it came out too. Then Ewoks showed up and they were all “you know what, Empire rocked”. Personally I really liked this one, I like how it broke away from a lot of SW bad habits. It’s about time we got some non-Skywalkers saving the damn galaxy.

If Darth Vader built C3PO, why did he never recognize him?

I was reading the reviews on IMDB, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many bad reviews in my life. People saying it was so bad they were crying 30 minutes into it! LOL! There you go, leave it to Disney.

Disney killed the golden goose.

They couldn’t just tell a decent story - no they had to destroy the entire past series to show how cool they are.

Another definition provided by Miriam-Webster online:

a sanctioned or accepted group or body of related works - the canon of great literature

I guess that qualifies. True fans don't want this latest installment associated with the other movies.

Incidental, after Empire Strikes Back I gave up on the series.

“What’s with this official “canon” business?”

After the original 3 movies, there were a lot of other stories that came out set in the “Star Wars universe”, from books, comic books, tv shows, video games, the role playing game, etc, all from different authors. A lot of that came out before the prequels movies done by George Lucas and sometimes ended up conflicting with what was in the prequels.

When Disney bought the property, they decided to make almost all of that stuff “non-canon”, meaning not part of the official storyline. Mainly they had to do it because there were books set after the original series, in the same time these new movies are set, but they were not going to adapt those books. So they had to basically say those books, and a lot of other stories, were no longer in continuity with the movies, to avoid a bunch of conflicting storylines.

It’s a generic term for things accepted as part of the whole work. It got applied to the Bible because there’s a whole bunch of books that have been declared non-canon. But it actually comes from a Greek musical term.

Last Jedi wasn’t even that bad. It just didn’t make a lot of sense and really Disney should have planned an actual trilogy instead of just winging it.

Six-hundred million is still a major box office haul. More than enough to make another installment.
