Back in the olden days mom would wash the laundry and hang it out in freezing weather. Soon it would be stiff as a board, and soon freeze dried. Yes, it still dried.

Back in the day, you brought in the freeze-dry clothes off the line and hung them inside, to finish.

I remember every mom had a reel-type clothesline to run across the kitchen; everyone had to duck under the clothes all day until they dried. Good times.
